food was ok, as was the service, but when the bill arrived, we noticed at least a $50 overcharge. we pointed this out to the waitress and she corrected the mistake almost casually. the table next to us was observing our situation and started checking their check carefully. they then pulled over the waitress and pointed out another significant overcharge... more

the food was good but the service was terrible. It took 25 minutes for the salad to arrive and over an hour for the pizza more

I'm surprised by how polarized the reviews of this restaurant are. Our family of four ate at Kiawe Kitchen four times -- two lunches, two dinners -- during a stay in Volcano in June 2008. Everything we ordered was first-rate, and the service, while slow, was well within the range of other restaurants we visited in our three weeks in... more

The place was a Godsend since we had driven all day and had spend hours in cold sleet waiting for the nearby volcano site to get dark. We found the place quite by accident. My wife and I agreed that the pizza she ordered (a special this day) was the best pie we had ever eaten. Also, the top shelf... more

They tried to pass off canned ham from the grocery store as real prosciutto. Overpriced. Pizza dough was sloppy and greasy. Our waitress was nice to us but everything else was terrible. more

I feel like I ate at a different restaurant than some of these other reviewers! Maybe the service is spotty, but we must have hit it on a good night? We had a great bottle of organic Pinot Noir for around $30, cheaper than we'd pay at home in Philadelphia even at the wine store. I really liked the deconstructed... more

Dined here for both lunch and dinner April 2008. Overall, pricy food, but there aren't many options in this little village. Our lunch - 2 sandwiches, one coffee, one juice totaled $38 (not including tip). Hubby asked for chips or fries with his lunch sandwich and he was promptly told they only serve healthy foods! Lunch service was much better... more

This was a tiny little place next to a rundown gas station-- our expectations were low as we walked up the steps. But we didn't seem to have many choices nearby...and we were headed just around the corner to Volcano Nat'l Park for the day. Despite first appearances, it was surprisely phenomenal! They had simple dishes for the picky eater,... more

There are four restaurants in Volcano Village, and if you had to choose just one, I would recommend going to Thai Thai, a truly authentic Thai restaurant. If you're not into Thai food, though, you could try Kiawe Kitchen. The strength of the place is its pizzas, which are wood-fired and quite tasty despite being way too expensive ($17). Other... more

Living on the Big Isle, I've eaten here a few times. The food is usually fine - while the service varies. My friend was visiting and we were doing a little island tour. We stopped there for lunch. I had a Cesar salad. Oh my g*d, it was the worst case of food poisoning I'd experienced since I was a... more
