Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Always a heirloom for a wonderful dinner! The sea bass was fantastic! The pasta tasty as in Italy. A bit disappointed by the seating area that was a bit cold being in the closed summer patio area. And: please, please remember to put bread and...olive oil on table! Being European and often in Italy: bread is not on menu. Bread is on table! I asked for as I’d have ordered heavy red wine right off the bat. But not cool to have to order bread from menu. I can’t do wine on empty stomach…too bad.More

The bar is great and bartender made great drinks, though I had a glass of wine. The wild mushroom salad was excellent. The truffle ragu ... I wasn't impressed particularly at this price point: The black truffles shavings were subtly flavored and could not hold...up to the strong tomato flavor of the sauce ... the sauce was fine just not for truffles. The veal and meat ragu didn't have enough meat to really flavor the sauce. The pasta itself was excellent. In summary, this should have been a fresh pasta, cheese and red sauce dish ... at a much lower price point, and reserve the truffles for a more delicately flavored dish where their flavor could be showcasedMore

We loved the decor, which is urban trendy but comfortable. We absolutely loved the food! The duck was perfectly cooked and delicious. The salmon was great. The desserts were beyond yummy -- each of us ordered a different one and we shared -- hard to...say which was best.More

We were in Dayton for one night for business and wanted a good "real" dinner after being on the road all day. We found it. First, the service was exceptional by our waiter, Joe. Second, the food was enjoyable. We had the farmhouse bread (unbelievable)...ceasar salad and meatballs as the appetizers. Then we both chose the filet mignon. All delicious/amazing entrees. Even though we were full, we opted for the donuts as dessert. Very good. I am very happy we chose this restaurant. If we are ever back in this area, we will definitely be back.More

We (2 couples) who dine out at a wide variety of Dayton upscale restaurants have been to The Roost at least 5 times in the last year, it was that good. This time, we were disappointed. Their best dish was the Mussels di Finocchio, which...is an appetizer. It wasn’t as good; maybe they changed the recipe, maybe the chef cut back on the cream sauce, but it was sub par. The entree’s, mushroom scallops, market fish (salmon) tosconna were fabulous; the filet was under-cooked (ordered med; came out very medium rare) with too salty Boursin mashed potatoes, and the linguine pesto was not impressive. We passed on average dessert selections and left wondering if we will return. The one highlight was service. Evelyn was amazing, other staff assisted as needed, and the hostess exceeded expectations with a crucial accommodation. This was the place we expected/received quality food and why we returned. The Chef needs to return to his/her A-game….until, then The Roost will be a tough choice to return.More

We ate at Roost for a weekend dinner, and I kept asking myself why we have never eaten here before. The food, service, and ambiance is fantastic. There are so many points that distinguish Roost Modern Italian from other Dayton restaurants. This includes the little...touches like the lavender herbal hand soak and towel prior to dining. The ability to purchase wine by the carafe instead of merely by the glass or bottle, and the selections are extremely good. The ambiance is quiet with light background music, which is comforting from the many loud dining experiences of so many of the better restaurants. My dining partner chose to order from the Restaurant Week specials. I selected a salad and entree from the regular menu. The carpaccio salad was fresh and inventive. The presentation was a huge part of the appeal as it was different from the standard "wedge" salads offered by so many restaurants. For my main entree, I had the chicken with potato gnocchi. The chicken was tender and juicy. The accompanying mushrooms and artichokes were flavorful. For dessert, we shared the rich chocolate cake from the Restaurant Week order. The dinner was topped off with complimentary Limoncello shots. My only gripe is there's no cappuccino offering.More

The atmosphere was very nice but it was a bit noisy. Our server was okay. We asked for a tea near the end of our dinner and never received it. The reason that I am giving them five stars is because the food was amazing!!...I got the filet and it was cooked perfectly! My Husband got the salmon special which was also very good! My Son ordered the swordfish and loved it! I would definitely recommend using the valet. There was no parking available that I could see around the restaurant. Highly recommended.More

I have been Dining at Roost since it’s opening . It never disappoints. Roost has a very nice menu and wine list . The staff is professional and attentive. The servers at the bar are top notch. The swordfish , filet and halibut are terrific...as are the specials. The meals I have had at Roost are as good as I have had at really good restaurants all over the country.More

Not sure why this restaurant is so popular. Slow service, minimal menu options, mediocre food. If you're looking for great Italian, this isn't the place.

Very disappointed! We went to this restaurant with another couple. The mushroom salad was great. My husband had the iceberg salad and that was good. We ordered a bottle of Chalk Hill Cabernet wine and were happy with that. Our friend had the pork chop...and that was great! I ordered the special which was sea scallops with raviolis. Two of the four scallops tasted like ammonia. I mentioned to our server and she apologized and then said I can have the chef prepare two more or comp you a dessert. At that point I didn’t feel hungry for more scallops nor dessert. The special was $34. I thought the fair thing to do was comp at least half the price. This was a turn off and we will most likely not go back.More

After taking our girls to the highschool dance we thought we would give this very much talked about restaurant a try. Our service was extremely slow and half the time a man was helping us when our waitress was on another long disappearing act. Our...wine glasses stayed empty. After finally asking us if we would like a refill. Before going to get them, she took a table of 8's order. This table was directly next to us, extremely loud and using horrible drunken language. Our food finally came with only 25 mins to spare before having to go back and pick up our kids from the dance. It was extremely underwhelming. I got the filet which was not cooked properly, way too done. Everything was cold. His was also cold and flavorless. I asked to please have it taken back for just spaghetti due to time I could not wait on another more intense dish. After waiting a while she finally brought it out. Showed no remorse for either one of us touching our dishes. We luckily had a 125 dollar gift card. We left her everything including the untouched spaghetti and assured them to keep the rest of the gift card because we would not be returning. The owner/chef told me as I was walking out she disagreed with me stating my filet was not cooked properly. Strange I was at Fleming's two weeks before, ordered a filet the same exact way and it was no where near the same. I'm sorry not a good experience. After we got the kids we all went to Buffalo wings and finally got to eat and had fantastic service even in a sports bar.More

I went to Roost with friends on a weekday evening. It was fairly busy. Our service was good. The food was very good. I had the Asiago Crusted Chicken with the pest cream linguine with tomatoes, pine nuts and fresh spinach. It was very good,...the asiago crust was just perfect, it was enough to enhance the flavor of the chicken without being to thick or overwhelming. The past was delicious, for a cream sauce it was very light, not overpowering. The fresh vegetables were perfectly cooked, not mushy or crunch, they were just right! I would make one suggestion and that would be to have some smaller, lower priced salads to go with the meal. It wasn't included in my meal and I think a smaller salad would have been nice. The warm bread was excellent, and the tomato based dipping sauce was an intriguing surprise, I would have not thought to try it but it was very good. And I guess that's why I go to nice restaurants, to try new things! Unfortunately, I was too full for dessert. They have a very extensive wine menu so there was a lot to choose from. Our server was very friendly and efficient, we were in a group of seven and she was very timely.More
