Stumbled upon this place on a recent trip to Philly. Great Octoberfest beers and atmosphere. Even had a cutout of the Hasselhoff for authenticity.
We stopped in for a quick lunch and a beer and had a great meal. They have hundreds of bottled beers (not just German) and dozens on tap. We tried two different German pilseners on tap and both were excellent. The waitress was very knowledgeable about the beer and steered us in the right direction for our tastes. Food wise,... More
We happened upon this restaurant while looking for a place to eat where we could sit outside, as we had a dog with us. They have a wide variety of authentic German beer on tap and the waitress's recommendation was delicious! My son had a hamburger and a pretzel appetizer. All I can say is, "yum!" The adults all ordered... More
We actually went in March 2012 and not August, but the dates didn't go back that far. They'd only been open for a short time when we went and sadly the service reflected that. The beer selection was good, but the service and attention to detail was less than satisfactory. The staff was too busy chum it up with each... More
We went here for a sunday dinner. It wasn't busy and only one wait staff was working. Food came out quickly. They had a great beer selection - even german beer that you usually don't find in the US. I loved the potato pancakes which came with shredded apple salad and sour cream. Delicious! I wasn't a big fan of... More
The beer choices are amazing. I described the kind of rich beer I like, and the waitress brought me three small samplings to help me decide. One more delicious than the other. Excellent authentic-tasting German food--some much like my mother made. Very good service; reasonable prices. The place was fairly quiet on a February weeknight.
My boyfriend and I were wandering around Old City on our weekend trip to Philly and we stumbled into Bierstube. We loved the atmosphere right away, there were people there that were full of life, but it wasn't out of control packed so that it was uncomfortable. While we waited at the bar, a young couple was concerned that our... More
I have visited many German restaurants throughout Germany and the US. My wife and I were really looking forward to a great German dinner in an authentic German restaurant. Their marketing suggest it is a German restaurant. When we arrived, we were taken downstairs. The restaurant was nothing more than a loud bar. Also, the food was very mediocre at... More
The place to go after dinner in the Old City. Excellent choice of beers -- especially Belgian and German. Friendly. Noisy. Open late. Try it!
Many German cities have a section called “Altstadt”, or Old City. Old City Philadelphia has a bit in Germany in the Bierstube, or beer room at 206 Market St. They have a large selection of draft beers and an enormous list of bottle beers from around the globe. The food is mostly German, but they also have the usual burgers.... More
