WARNING : Total incompetence within RCI |
|
At the end of May I was notified by RCI that I had a week outstanding and to ‘use it or lose it by 31st June 2009’ based on this notification I subsequently booked a week in Gran Canaria to be taken June 2009 for which I have received written confirmation. Today I had a telephone call from Joyce S…k. RCI Florida. She told me that RCI made a MISTAKE on my account and I am not entitled to the week that I used for Gran Canaria. She said she could a) Cancel this week - at no cost to me, although there was no mention of reimbursing the exchange fee. b) I could use a future week to exchange instead of banking it. As this was a mistake made by RCI and I booked in good faith (remember they contacted me I didn’t know about this) I am not prepared to bank any additional weeks, pay any additional costs for a holiday I had not planned on taking or in fact change my plans now that I am booked in Gran Canaria. Joyce finally agreed that I can still take the week at no extra cost to me (financial or otherwise). She did however say that she was unable to confirm this to me in writing and I was just to take her word as confirmation!!! Later this afternoon I received a phone call from RCI in the UK telling me there was no reply from my UK phone number (hardly surprising I haven’t lived in the UK for many years) so they tried my Spanish number which is good because that is the only address they have and that is where they send all my paperwork. Apparently the aforesaid Joyce had emailed them asking them to check to see if I wanted to cancel my week in Gran Canaria or deposit a future week that could be exchanged against it. Following the telecon I looked at the RCI website and it shows only two entries, in my confirmed holidays - first for an up-coming holiday in USA and second for a past holiday in Portugal. So, have RCI already cancelled the Gran Canaria holiday without my knowledge?
Also while checking my account I noticed that I appear to own an additional week which is listed as week 50 February – now while maths may not be my best subject, I do know that week 50 normally falls in December and not February. Is it my imagination or are RCI nowhere as near as professional as they used to be. What are we paying our money for – incompetent people who send incorrect information, then try to backtrack, don’t even know when in the year a week number falls even though they are supposedly dealing with this everyday as part of their job. I wonder has anyone else been subjected to the lunacy that appears to be widespread within RCI. |

Are you still working with RCI to sort out your problems and what do you hope to achieve by posting your complaint on TA. You must be aware that with all the transactions a company like RCI does each year there are going to be or two glitches. You appear to be giving Joyce a hard time , but from my reading of your post she is trying to make good a not so pleasant situation. What am I missing here?

Beanb What I am trying to achieve is to warn people by highlighting the incompetence within RCI generally, but if you think I am giving Joyce a hard time then maybe she deserves it after all she is the representative of that company. Joyce was unable or unwilling to confirm in writing that I could use my week in Gran Canaria and even though I told her I was unwilling to bank my 2008 week as I was already using it for a holiday I am taking in Florida she STILL contacted RCI UK and asked them to phone me with the same questions. – 1.Would I cancel my Gran Canaria holiday, even though it was their mistake? 2.Would I pay an additional holiday fee? 3.Would I deposit my 2008 week? (I wonder what part of NO she did not understand). As a result of the fiasco and feeling uneasy about my forthcoming holiday in Florida I have just spoken to the resort where I own a week. They told me that RCI (and I can only assume by RCI they mean Joyce) has deposited my week today so I could no longer use it. However they re-issued and have emailed me straight back confirming that I am using my week. Referring to week 50 February – I asked my Florida complex why they had added this to my account (Joyce also told me that this was down to them and nothing to do with RCI). They knew nothing about it and in fact did not have access to RCI’s database. So in my opinion RCI not only made a mistake which they did not want to correct but compounded the mistake by depositing my week without my knowledge and also lied about who could access owner’s information and accounts. If you were considering using RCI would you not want to be made aware of what it is like being a member – because I wish someone had told me before I joined them.

Aquilas I have some degree of sympathy for you and believe that RCI should in some way compensate you for what has happened but by your own admission th dates didnt add up, consequently why did you go ahaed with the booking knowing before hand that hings were not kosher. I dont use RCI at all by the way I use the indepenadents, mainly because they provide me with better all round service.

No no no beanb, I did not try to book a holiday against the February dates (that is a totally different issue). I booked the holiday against a week RCI told me I had outstanding from 2004/2005, and said that I had must use it by June 09 or lose it. I admit I thought I had used all of my weeks but as it was so long ago I assumed I had overlooked it. Even so when I phoned them to discuss the exchange and they said it was definately mine and my account was correct. It is only now, 4 months later that they realised that the week they had credited to me actually belonged to someone else. Regarding the February week 50 I asked what this was for and they said it was nothing to do with them and had been added to my account by Orange Lake. When I spoke to OL as I said yesterday evening, they said they had no access to RCI's databases and they knew nothing at all about a week in February. So even though I have questioned this with both RCI and Orange Lake it looks as if somewhere in the future it could cause problems. I only hope that they don't expect me to pay a maintenance fee on it !!

I certainly acknowledge that RCI haven't covered themselves in glory here, but the fault isn't entirely with them. As a member of RCI you must know that you only have a 3 year time scale to use a deposited week. Therefore there is no way a 2004 week could still be usable unless you had paid to extend its life. If you had done that you would surely have remembered. I strongly suspect there was an element of believing that RCI wouldn't notice their mistake and a free week was to be had. Unless you have many, many weeks of timeshare deposited I find it hard to believe that anybody wouldn't know precisely what they had used and what was still available. All that is required to check the facts is to log in to the RCI site.
