First time flying business class. Have question about fees
Save

I just booked a flight from RSW(Fort Myers) to Rome, using frequent flier miles and flying business class. I booked through United, but am taking SilverJet from RSW to Orlando, and then Lufthansa from Orlando to Frankfurt and then onto Rome. I would like to check one bag that is less than fifty pounds. Will I be charged for the bag? My worry is SilverJet. After I booked the ticket it said I would need to pay $200 per bag. Does that make sense?

My other question is how do I reserve seats? As I said I am flying business class on Lufthansa but I bought my ticket through United. The website said I would have to choose seats once I was at the airport. Many thanks in advance.

Call the airline and ask for confirmation codes and seat assignments. This usually works better than online

If you pull up your itinerary on UA, you will be able to get your LH confirmation numbers. It's on the upper left hand side, next to your UA confirmation number. If you have trouble just call UA and ask them for it.

Then, you can contact LH and choose seats. Sorry, I don't know what Silverjet is, but if this was all booked on UA in business, you should get two free checked bags.

My apologies...The airline from RSW to Orlando is Silver airlines. When I just pulled up my itinerary it said 70 bucks for the first checked bag. Is that possible even if I booked a business class ticket?

Are you sure you have a flight on Silverjet? I think they are out of business.

Ok, even if you start on Silver, you still get two free checked bags. There is no business class on Silver, correct? It's just a glitch. You won't have to pay.

You can try this site - http://www.iflybags.com

It has both the airlines' baggage allowances and the two baggage protocols for connecting flights (US "First Marketing Carrier" and the IATA "Most Significant Carrier") built in (the rules that apply to you will be the US FMC rules). Enter your flight numbers for the outbound legs exactly as they appear on the ticket, the class of service for each flight, then the number of bags you plan to take and their approximate weight. It will tell you what fees you need to pay (if any).

Unfortunately it doesn't give you a description of the allowance, just the charge (if any) for what you plan to take. So you need to play with the number of bags and their weight.

Start with one bag at 50lbs/23kg. If that's free go to one bag at 70lbs/32kg. Then do two @50/23 and two @70/32. You'll be able to work out what the allowance is by deduction.
