Finnair Non-refundable No Name Change Policy

Long story short, I had tickets booked through Finnair via a travel agency and because something came up and I simply cannot take this flight anymore, both the travel agency and Finnair are not giving me the option to cancel this reservation. I had to call the travel agency who told me to call Finnair and Finnair who told me to call back to the travel agency, and I'm tired of their responsibility unloading. The tickets cost me $1200 and they told me that I had the option to change the date of the ticket with an additional charge of $300 along with the difference in fare price, but there is no use in changing the date if I cannot make this specific date. I understand there are specific airline policies and $1200 may not be much for some of you, but for a student like me, I am not willing to give up $1200 on a plane ticket that I am not even going to be able to use. Can anybody help me out?

If you do cancel you won't get $1200 back anyway, you'll potentially only get taxes minus any fees from the third party agent. As you booked through a third party it is them who own your booking and who you need to speak to. Incidentally, who is it you booked with?

I'm sorry, but the person offloading the responsibility is you. The terms and conditions of the ticket will have been clearly laid out prior to purchase, you will have needed to accept them to buy the ticket. Remember the box you ticked.?

You can buy fully refundable tickets, they are full fare and very expensive, you can then buy discounted tickets, discounted because they are non refundable, this is what you bought. Changeable but non refundable. This is the terms you agreed to to get that price. Not bothering to read them is no justification. In fact there is seldom a justification for entering a contract and pretending you read it first. When you do that, you cannot them kick off you don't like the terms you agreed to.

Who was the agency please?

OK, there is still another way you can take back PART of your money. Ask your travel agency to help you apply tax refund and get the airport tax back for a period of 4-6 months.

Wanting a refund for a nonrefundable ticket... not a good life choice.

Wanting to change the name on a ticket that is not transferrable... Still not a good life choice.

Not understanding the restrictions on a ticket and expecting the world to cave to personal desires... You've got to be kidding, right?

I await the inevitable "you guys must work for the airline" comment.

So if the ticket is non refundable then thats what it is. I am sure you can cancel it, but lose your money minus any taxes which should be returned.

The something that came up is this an event covered by the travel insurance you took out or have?

Jiny, $1200 is a lot for 99% of the people who post here, so the responses have nothing to do with how willing or able we are to lose that type of money. What you can or cannot get refunded is totally dependent on the type of ticket which you bought.

Your post heading implies that Finnair have a policy of not refunding for cancellations and not allowing name changes. That is not the case. Finnair, like every other airline, sells cheaper non-refundable, no name changes tickets and more expensive tickets that allow for changes and cancellations. I presume when you say they're not giving you the option of cancelling the ticket, you mean you can't cancel it and get your money back, because obviously no-one can stop you from cancelling it. But if, as it appears, you have bought a non-refundable, no free changes allowed ticket, you are not entitled to anything back other than taxes. I feel some sympathy, because you sound as though you don't know much about air travel and you have learned an expensive lesson. Next time, book direct with the airline and don't assume that the cheapest ticket is the right one for you.

i have every sympathy with the student, as there is quite a bit of money involved. however, if an agent bought the ticket for him, he may not have been made aware that it was a non-refundable ticket. if he did not sign anything, or was not informed that it was non-refundable, then he has a right to be agrieved, not with finnair, but with the travel agent. he could well have a right of redress from the agent who may have been negligent.

the only other aspect is WHY can the op not use the ticket? he might be best arranging other matters so as to be able to fly on the dates involved. if it was due to illness in direct family, then his travel insurance should compensate him
