This place is fantastic, a little gem far from the madding crowd, my husband and I stopped here for lunch and it was perfect, an unassuming old village hall that holds a secret delight in the form of fantastic low priced food perfectly prepared to exceptional standards and lovely decorated and maintained toilets.

Highly recommended!

We had a delicious meal and a fantastic afternoon tea at the Whistle Stop Cafe in Kinlochewe (on two separate days!!). Lis is a superb cook. Afternoon tea consisted of Keemun and Darjeeling tea and fruit cake with lemon curd and light fruit scone with jam and butter. Divine. These convinced us that Lis knew what she wasdoing. Next evening we took our bottle of wine along (no corkage charge) and were treated to mackerel and salmon fishcakes, beef and mushroom pie ( I don't even like mushrooms!) followed by chocolate cake with fruits and poached pears with panna cotta. All were brilliant. We called in before we left for home to collect two venison pies to take back with us. We are looking forward to returning next year!

The village hall is a very unprepossessing building from the outside. Inside it is tastefully decorated and has a wood burning stove, rustic tables and chairs and two leather sofas. Very clean and Lis is friendly and unpretentious. What a find!!!

Agree wholeheartedly.

We were in Torridon and were not tipped off about this place till the last couple of days otherwise we would have eaten here everynight. Evening meal surpassed itself and the combination of flavours show the lady in charge really knows about food. Please give the Whistle Stop Cafe a try its the best you will get and the quality of food is fantastic. For all you foodies out there!

Agree with all of you, we found this about a year ago just after she had opened and have been back four or five times now. Well worth a visit, fab food and great conversation from Liz, she even did a little dance for the guests whilst in the kitchen. Puddings are to die for.

I agree one-time posters make me suspicious - but my family live near to Whistle-stop cafe, and it gets rave reviews amongst the locals here. I haven't heard a bad word said about it, it's taken the teastop world by a storm in the area. So I wouldn't write it off based on one-time reviews, come and try it for yourselves (I'm in Gairloch this weekend, 20 mins from Kinlochewe, and the weather is glorious :-) )

I've not tried the new cafe, as I've not been in the area recently. But I used to love the millionaire's shortbread from the old cafe at the post office! After having some with coffee when driving between Gairloch and Torridon we'd buy some to put in a box on the way past to take on our journey south!

Finally visited Whistlestop Cafe today. It's just opened for 2011 season, and is currently open until 5pm seven days a week, as well as evenings on fri/sat.

The interior is great fun - decadent paintings and bright colour swatches interplay well with the heavy wood furniture and real wood-burning stove. It was cold inside, but with such a large space to keep warm, that can't be helped.

The menu is intricate, different and interesting. A butternut squash, carrot and chili soup was warming and fiery (although I didn't appreciate the gratuitious oil drizzled on top). An avocado, feta and olive salad was interesting and tasty (perhaps the olives could have been better quality). It is operated by a confident and accomplished chef, and the quality shines through. I was too full to attempt a dessert, but the menu of cakes and sweets was mouth-watering. This comfy cafe is truly a hidden gem in Wester Ross. I'd urge anyone passing near to Kinlochewe to pop in - you won't be disappointed!

What a gem. Lovely scones and coffee for our meeting by the woodburning stove. Had a take away roast chicken sandwich to munch in the car on the way home. Delicious and willl definitely be back.

Haven't tried it, but Nanny's shop and tiny cafe in Sheildaig, just down the road is excellent if you are in the area - really good home baking - especially the cakes!
