Isla Mujeres Day Trip Itinerary?

Maybe I should ask this question on the Isla forum, but I am constantly checking this board since my husband and I are travelling to EPM in a few weeks so I thought I would start here.

We have never been to Isla Mujeres so we are considering a day trip over there during our upcoming 6 day stay at EPM. I am wondering if anyone who has been before would like to comment on what your itinerary would look like if you were going for the day?

TIA!

Order a Mapchick map and review it.

Get on the first ferry departure in the AM.

Ignore everyone offering to sell you anything, tours, etc.

On arrival, walk across the street and rent a golf cart from Gomars.

Tour the island, and take lots of photos.

Lunch at one of many great spots.

Head back to Playa Norte and chill for the afternoon.

Grab dinner at one of the many great restaraunts.

Return the cart and ferry back.

We purchased the Map Chick Map and I read it at least 25 times. We sort of conjured up a few places we would visit and some other activities we may partake in. I left the map in the safe and when we arrived at Isla we winged it. First, we rented a cart, went around the island with no care in the world and stopped when and where we wanted. Other than the heat, it was a great day. We had so much fun in the small bars and shops that the map did not mention, off the wall places. I didn't feel like I was in a tourist trap!

Be sure and walk the streets of downtown IM. Great real Mexican town but do that during the evening. To hot during the day.

If you want a nice lunch I recommend Rolandis

Great place for a drink and some nachos is at Graffon. There is grill to the right of where you enter the park that has a beautiful view of Cancun

Also Many nice restaurant in the town and inexpensive

North shore for drinks is a great stop.

DITTO!!!!! to the first reply above...

On a Sunday, the perfect spot for the afternoon is to pull in to Fenix after touring in your Gomars Golfcart for the live Salsa Band. Great drinks. Fantastic.

Do check your golf cart out well before taking off... Brakes, parking break, etc...

Do get those maps. They are so worth it.

But, we found that ours began to come apart at the seams(folds).

Get some wide clear packing tape and reinforce your maps when you get them.

You will be good to go.

Gomars will allow for returns later than most other golf cart rentals... So, you do not have to rush to be back somewhere by quarter of five.

Had a fantastic day!

Only disappointment was our food choices.

Didn't specify Grouper on our Tix-n-Xik. And, unlike many rave reviews, were not impressed with Mango Cafe.

Enjoy!!!!

Get there early and rent a cart.

Tour the island until noon and return the cart.

Have lunch at Bally Hoo.

Hit some beach bars on Playa Norte.

Watch the sunset.

Have dinner in town.

Take a late ferry back.

I also agree with Rolandi's Pizzeria on 10 Hidalgo Av. as we were just there for my birthday lunch last week. It was AWESOME! Nice ambiance, great margaritas, pizza, caesar salad, minestrone soup and fried calamari, YUM!

We rented a golf cart on the ferry from one of the Ultramar guys as he was telling everyone that they could be sold out and didn't want to risk it and the place was like 5 blocks from the dock! I agree that try just cross the street at Gomar, wish I had.

How often do the ferries run between Isla and the mainland?

If you take the Ultramar from Puerto Juarez, they run every 30 minutes until about 8:30 or maybe 9:30 when they run hourly. Trip takes about 20 minutes. For lunch I prefer one of the seafood restaurants along Medina (main street where the ferry docks). Last year I had great shrimp tacos at Brisas Grill.

Is a half day at isla mujeres enough time to see and explore everything? Say take earliest ferry possible and be back to the resort by 1-2pm?
