Viceroy |
|
Anybody know what is happening at Viceroy? We were told in March they would be open for this season. I read on Anguilla Talk that they are hiring. They have some nice looking restaurants on their web site, yeah I know, sacriligious, but, that's progress. They probably said the same thing about Cuisinart when it was built. Ellen |

We walked down there in Aug. I can't imagine it being open March but what do I know. Interesting but on Sunday Maggie and I saw many East Indian men walking up and down the beach. Being new to the island we figured they were tourists with a group. Later we learned V had brought in East Indian workers. I found another scenario where Antiguans were brought in to work in other areas of construction and infrastructure.

I'd be curious to know the answer too. When I was there in late May/early June they didn't look like they'd have it open for awhile. Will they be just condos for sale or a hotel as well?

Ellen: You might want to take a look at Don Mitchell's October 24th article, regarding "Viceroy" and their salesy, imaginative (and totally false) vistas of Meads and Barnes Bays. In addition, the Altamer developers share an equally vivid and totally fictitious reality regarding Shoal Bay West. These fraudulent attempts by the developers of Viceroy and Altamer to mislead prospective investors should provide all of us with a realistic viewpoint of their success to date in marketing these properties. Caveat Emptor. Zabar

Zabar: Most resorts in Las Vegas show a picture of the Strip from their property – doesn’t mean that view is seen from their property. I’d venture to say the same goes for New York, San Francisco or any other city with an attraction nearby, it’s called marketing. Viceroy will have restaurants and it is up to the buyer to know which ones have a view and good food. Viceroy is a fact of life in Anguilla, and is there to stay, it will bring jobs and money to the local economy, if one doesn’t like it, well then, they don’t have to frequent it. I’m inquiring for selfish reasons, two of my favorite restaurants are gone, Cedar Grove and Bananas. If Viceroy can supply a replacement, I’m there. Thanks for your reply. Ellen

I'm with you Ellen - Cedar Grove was my fav! The ambiance will be hard to replace.

Sexed Up glossy sales brochures is nothing new, it happens the world over. It is up to the buyer to check out the facts, and unless one is blind anyone can see the photoes does not resemble Meads Bay as it is today. A potential buyer should also be able to judge whether he/she gets views of Meads or Barnes, distance to beach etc. Ellen - back to you question - I will try to check it out and report back after our holiday, early January. One of our friends have a bad habit of wandering on to the contruction site, "on his way to Meads Bay" and gets a personal escort of/off the site. He ususally finds out what is going on by chatting to his escort. As far as I have been told, although severe delays, construction is still progressing. Whether the show houses were completed by end of March, I can not say, but they were working towards that target when we were there in January. One of the restaurants were built into the cliff and on groundlevel with Barnes beach, the beach in front is only about 5 metres wide at the best. It will be interesting to hear how it fared during Omar, as I have been told Barnes lost most of it sand.

Oh Ellen, you had to bring up Cedar Grove. I'm sad. AXA BB

Ahhhhhhhhh Cedar Grove....fish in paper.......ahhhhhhhhh. My wife and I stayed with Bart the last week in August on the beach and it was outright depressing. RBH was such a vibrant, fun, great palce in its day. Now with all the foliage ripped up and nobody really around it was wierd. We got our last stay in at RBH but it was not a pleasant last memory! We will just have to remember it as it was.

OT, thanks, I'm just curious as to what is going on. FFF& AXABB -Yes, that was one of my favorite restaurants, I loved everything about it - especially the paper wrapped snapper. I think ALR said they have it at Koal Keel, but that is too far for me to drive at night. That was my first meal every year, paper wrapped snapper and Jeremiah salad, then we would go to the bar and have some drinks and visit with Oliver. Miss it all. Ellen

I always said RBH and Cedar Grove are old Anguilla- the way the island should be! I loved Cedar Grove. Smoke"s snapper in parchment was always one of my favorites at Koal Keel--so when it was on the menu at Cedar Grove it was an easy choice. How about those homemade soups. Over the years Cedar Grove brought back our old visits--Simon the bartender was at Cap in the early 90's. When we ran into him at CG he rememebered us--and we never forgot his killer "yellow birds".
