Does the "no good snorkling off the beach" apply to the west coast?

Actually, you will find the conditions a bit better there. We have actually done some beach dives off of Crash Boat Beach.

The absolutely best place for snorkeling is La Parguera in Lajas.

Just back from Copamarina Resort in Guanica - excellent snorkling at public beach (Rt 333 @ Km 5.5) west of resort. La Parguea has best snorkling and you can add the Bioluminescent Bay to your itinery for the ultimate in thrills in snorkling.

Rincon has a great snorkel beach called steps that has just been made a marine park. Large staghorn coral formations less than a 100 yards off the beach. Almost always a special treat there like a turtle or a sting ray. Whales around in the winter too. Rincon is a fun town too with lots of places to stay and fun bars and good rastaurants.

May I suggest taking a boat to the small island of Desecheo? It is right off the coast of Rincon, about 45 minutes away. Try Taino divers.

The cost is approximate 35$, I think and they provide food and drinks, and even snorkle equiptment if you need it. Last time I was there, 200 ft easy visibility. We snorkled some caves and saw squid, baracuda, turtles, and thousands of minnows.

I bought one of those underwater desposable cameras and got some good photos. This time of year whales past by.
