Cancun Beach Maintenance Begins

The long-awaited beach maintenance began yesterday--Wednesday, July 13. The main goal is to level out the "cliffs" that have developed.

Let's see who is here or coming soon to post some pics.

A personal fear: "When it ain't broke, don't fix it" comes to mind. This is the longest-lasting beach renewal we have ever had and the beaches are fine except for the problem of the "cliffs"--could they be keeping the waves at bay? When things go well I hate change! Hope I am wrong. Time will tell.

Hey, we'll take good news where we can get it! ;-)

Obviously, for many of us who have followed the restoration and maintenance project(s), this leveling isn't the first time they've done it since the post Wilma Restoration, perhaps the first from the "official" group specified responsible but they're leveled specific stretches in the past, both legally and let's say privately with some success.

I'd like to see some movement on further sand restoration plans that surpassed the original erosion estimates; and know particularly if any plans are in the works for the southern jetty and sandbar for Punta Cancun before next spring.

But, I'll take good news where we can get it and they've apparently also been doing studies on the erosion and potential for work since the restoration had been completed. With this we at least know that indeed, the maintenance plan has some teeth to it and that is indeed good news.

Will this potentially affect us at resorts in late July or are you talking about other beach areas?

Where are the cliffs you speak of? I was at Crown Paradise in March and didn't notice them,

I am not ssure where all of them are. Maybe others can help. I do know that they started by Punta Cancun--the Krystal specifically. They also want to do it now before turtle nesting season gets in full swing since the big walls of sand make it hard for the turtles to get up onto the beach and lay their eggs.

2 ft cliff at beach palace but still a beautiful beach.

i agree, don't fix what's not broken. i'd hate to go back to the pre-restoration beach.

I selfishly don't want to spend my week with beach "construction" after all of my saving and planning. I know the FACC has the ledge/cliff based on reviews and pictures. Hopefully maintenance wouldn't be too long or obtrusive???

I also didnt realize the turtles were still busy - interesting.

i'm selfishly hoping it doesnt affect my vacation either the 1st week of August...any news is much appreciated. I'd move down to the Riviera Maya if there are big machines in front of my hotel (Ritz Carlton)...

Anyone have an idea of the time duration of the project? If it only is a leveling of some areas I wouldn't think it would take more then a couple of weeks. Any ideas?

I have watched the restoration once in the past at the Golden Parnassus. They can cover a lot of territory very fast. If I remember correctly, they had our hotel finished in a matter of hours, and were out of our way in half a day.

Personally, I enjoyed watching the process, very fast and efficient.
