During my stay I made a 10 minute call to US using the hotel phone, and was charged 760 pesos for it. This is around $63 USD.
I wonder would it have been cheaper to just called with my own cell phone using the TELCEL network that showed up?

Never make an international call from a hotel. Its going to be cheaper using Telcel but I dont know the cost. A cheaper way is to use any of the Telmex Ladatel public phones all over town.
An At&T cell phone with an Intl plan would have cost $5.90 USD plus tax.
Thanks for the tips and replies.
With $5.9 per minute, it would have cost about the same calling directly with cell phone.
Next time I should just use Skype and buy skype credit to call home..,
I believe that Dan_Kom meant $0.59 per minute thus $5.90 + tax for a 10 minute call
many expats living in mexico use skype.
This expat uses Magicjack. Since I use it frequently to call home phones in the US, it works out cheaper for me.
Ditto with Robert on the MJ...Works fine here....
Actually AT&T charges $4.99/mo to enable phone usage in Mexico. They appears go through TELCEL, as it appeared as the carrier name on my iPhone. Then all the calls are charged $0.59/min. Just remember to turn the data roaming off!
Agrees on the skype and AT&T...Actually we use Verizon Wireless for 5 bucks a month, and less than 50 cents per minute for international calling.
I make calls back to the US, call as often as I like, talk as long as I want, and don't pay a penny. Skype. And I don't need a boat anchor, er laptop, to do so. A iPod Touch that I carry in my pocket does just dandy.
