Hi do you get sharks in the sea in Cancun?
Not generally. I asked last time I was there sailing. My guide says the water was too warm. Although there are the big whale sharks that come in spring. But I am sure there have to be some species that spend their time in the waters there. We never saw any.
YES there are and at times they come into the beach area! A few years ago while staying at Dreams in a tower suite we watched 3 sharks come around the point and into the beach swimming area. We called the desk and they rushed staff out the clear the water. They were feeding on a school of fish that were also near the beach. Remember always the you are the guest in their home and do not wear shiny jewelry into the water.
So doing stuff like jet skiing would be dangerous ?
It's the ocean, so yes there are sharks. Getting out of bed can be dangerous! Did you know that the odds a person will die from a vending machine accident (ie a machine tipping over on top of you) in a year are 1 in 112,000,000, while the odds that a person will die from a shark attack in a year are 1 in 251,800,000?

Most of the discussion goes like yes there are sharks in Cancun and yes there is a risk of shark attack, however slim they are. Cancun government and hotel managemets do their due deligence and help with what they can to keep us safe from shark, but that's no guaranty.
Look for signs, keep alert, and you "should be" fine, but don't count on my words 100%!
There are sharks in the area in certain seasons, but they almost always stay far from shore. It's not something you really need to worry about when you get in the water for a swim, or if you go out snorkeling/diving.
In 8 years living in Cancun, I've only ever heard of 1 shark attack and 1 other shark sighting at the beach.

Too funny - they will tell you what you want to hear
Sharks - divers may see them - very rare near shore
Florida has many more shark attacks
Snorkeling - a rare site will be the docile nurse shark- very shy - will not harm people
