Sharks? Cancun?

Hi. We are staying at the westin lagunamar and just read a review of sharks sighted. Does anyone know if this means the beach at the westin could possibly have sharks or the entire beach along the strip? I'm worried as we have young children and thinking twice of letting them in the ocean.

This area is not prown for sharks or attacks on Humans...There are nurse sharks and others, but very rarely have they attacked tourists in the water. I would not hesitate once to swim here in the waters on the Riviera Maya..

Op, do you allow your children to travel anywhere in an automobile or other vehicle? Do you know the statistical odds of being injured in one, vs. by shark, during the limited amount of time you will be in the ocean?

It amazes me people actually ask if there are Sharks around the Cancun area. It is not like the sharks get stopped in customs. There are various types of sharks all through out the Caribbean. If you will notice they even offer scuba diving with the Bull Sharks which are know as one of the most dangerous if not the most dangerous sharks around. The female Bull Sharks come to the Cancun area during the winter months to give birth to their young. This is also the time of year when the sardines are at their peak. With the area being fished out with all the tourist it is in my opinion driving the sharks closer to shores in search of food. Cancun does not want its tourism affected so of course they will spin the story to down play the potential rish of swimming in the ocean near the hotel zone and other areas frequented by tourists. Here is a simple rule to follow. Don't swim alone. Always make sure you have someone to swim with in case you encounter a shark. You don't have to out swim the shark just the person you are swimming with. Ex wives are really good swim partners :)
