Casa Magna: wifi, coffee maker, Tulum day trip?

We will be staying at this hotel for the first time in a couple of weeks. I am a little disconcerted that they charge for wifi; I have become used to this being free at most properties, even in the Caribbean. Perhaps free wifi in the business center or lobby? It looks like they might be charging even in those locations ... Also, has anyone asked for/experienced having a coffee maker in the room? Finally, we might like to go on a day trip to Tulum, and I know there are extensive comments elsewhere on Tripadvisor, but wanted to ask if anyone has gone on such a trip arranged by Casa Magna? If so, how much did it cost and was it fun? Thanks in advance!

I'm pretty sure the lobby wifi is free for all; for Gold and Platinum elites, wifi is free in the rooms. The business center is available, but is costly; they will do boarding passes for free. Also, across the street is a McDonald's which offers free wifi for customers. I do not think you will have any luck with a coffee maker in the room, even by request - but there is a coffee shop in the lobby. You can request a mini-fridge in the room (not sure of the cost). There is nothing is stopping you from buying a cheap coffee-maker at WalMart (or similar), if it's important to you - or bringing an immersion heater and some freeze dried coffee. As for Tulum, I'd shop around. They do have an excursion outlet, but it's likely the same or similar to all the other resorts. When I've gone to Tulum in the past, I rented a car.

We went to Tulum for the day, but that was from PDC ( PDC is an hour to 1 1/2 hours from the Casa Magna ). So from Casa to Tulum maybe 2 - 21/2 hours? Makes for a very long day. If you are just going for the archeological zone, I myself do not think it's worth the trip. IMHO. Hotter than Hades in Tulum, and that was in December ( not by tour ) . If you are into snorkeling/water, try Akumal or even closer, Puerto Morales. We pay for Wifi in the Royal Resorts.

to each her own, but 1.5 hours each way to visit a Mayan ruin is worth the trip to me. It's about 80 miles from Cancun to Tulum on a pretty decent highway, with some interesting stuff to see along the road.

My first time in the area in 1991 or 2, I went to Chichen Itza on the old road - at least 3 hours each way. I had no interest in anything but partying at the time, but Im so glad I went - and have visited many of the ruins since that trip.

You can probably do it on your own, but you would have to take the bus into downtown Cancun, and pick up the bus to Tulum. If you're doing this, make sure to get a ticket to Tulum Ruinas (ru-ee-nas) not Tulum Pueblo, which is the town of Tulum. The people at the ADO counter at the bus station in Cancun usually speak English so you shouldn't have a problem. They will announce the bus in English, but start paying attention when it's about 10-15 minutes before your bus should leave.

sometimes it's just easier to book a tour. I admit, my first trip to the area, I did more tours (although it was very easy to go to Isla Mujeres alone). Now, I do everything on my own, as long as there is a way to get back. Sometimes it's easy to get to places, but not so easy to get back so make sure to get the bus times in both directions.
