Other than staying at the Fiesta Coral or the Ritz, is there anything not as expensive but still decent? I'll be with my mom and sister and really didn't want to do an All Inclusive. We will be there for a week and we would like to eat out at other places and not be "stuck" at one hotel all day/all night. The more I'm looking the more it seems like we almost have to do an AI because if it's not the Fiesta Coral, I don't want to end up in a dump. LOL..

Have you considered staying in a condo instead of a hotel? Lots of choices at varying price points and you'll get significantly more square footage than the average hotel room plus multiple bedrooms, bathrooms AND a fully equipped kitchen (no-one says you have to cook).

Personally I like the Royal Resorts. There is 4 RR's in Cancun ( Royal Sands, Royal Caribbean, Royal Islander, and the Royal Cancun. If you rent thru an owner, you do NOT have to go AI at the RS or Royal Cancun. Try redweek.com, Tug2.net, or omcancun.com for renting thru owners. Rooms up to a 2 BR/2Ba villa.. JMHO.

The previous posters gave you some good suggestions. I like to venture off the property too and go the non-

AI route.

Check to see if hotels will allow 3 adults to a room, I know some people in the past have had problems.

Look into the Westin Lagunamar and the Royal Sands, both have villa style settings which is nice when traveling with a small group. Rent from an owner for the Royal Sands (sat-sat) and you can avoid going AI. With the 3 of you you would be comfortable in a 1 bedroom suite.

The Marriott's could work, but you didn't really share what "too expensive" is for you? I say they are both decent, but I've also shared a refurb is in order. My rate was $149/night and included breakfast buffet. Here was a post reporting a PL win at less than $100 a night. The post also mentions the Westin, but the one further south.

The Westin is too far south in the hotel zone if you want to venture off the property IMO

How about renting a condo at Solymar through Air B&B? I've neved used it before but it has really good reviews on tripadvisor ( http://www.tripadvisor.es/Hotel_Review-g150807-d1990494-Reviews-Solymar_Condos-Cancun_Yucatan_Peninsula.html#REVIEWS ). The ones with the best reviews are Michelle's ( https://es.airbnb.com/users/show/481799 ) and Nancy's ( http://www.vrbo.com/236884 ). Good luck~

There are two Westins. Take a look at the Westin Lagunamar. It is located in a great location to walk to resturants and shopping. It is right accross from La Isla Mall, The resort is very nice. Pools and beach are awesome. We have been several times. Love it. Linda

So last August I stayed the RIU ( the one right near the Party scene). I thought it was perfect location. I was looking for a non -inclusive close to that. Other than the Fiesta Coral, I couldn't figure out if there is another decent NON AI around there..... Is the Westin Lagunamar close to that area?

I looked at the Marriots but they seem to far away. I know we could take a bus and all that..but looking for something a little more convenient...

I'm using American Airlines points for this trip (hotel portion).. so my "choices' are sort of limited. I could do the Fiesta for 26K points a night or do the Westin Lagunamar for 16K points a night. I'm thinking I would just splurge and do the Fiesta but if the Westin Lag. is decent and close enough to go out to eat at places, I could save points for another trip! LOL.
