Akumal is a town? You can snorkel there? Do you or can you take tours there or do you go on your own and explore around?

Do you bring your own snorkel equipment or can you rent it? What do you suggest?

What else is there to do there, eat, drink, shop?

For those of you who have been there do you suggest it as a whole day or half..

Did you enjoy it?

Thanks Jean

We thought it was a great day out. Took the colectivo (cheap) from the hwy in PDC I would bring my own equipment (if you have them) as it can, depending on the mood of the person your renting them from be pricey. I would say 3 quarters of a day would be good unless your really into snorkling. Lots of fish & I believe turtles but we did not see them. Nice beach, bars and restaurants. We really like La Buena Vida. 5 to 8 mins left (north) of the beach. Good fair priced food & drink. I would do it again. Hope this helps. If you do go & happen to run into a gent called Tuttle please say hi from Kevin & Inge. Please also congratulate Him & Hank on their nuptials. Ive not met Hank but im sure if Tuttle is with him he is a great guy. Life is good. ITS.

Many people mention seeing turtle, but are there many colorful fish, and how does it compare to Puerto Morelos and Cozumel?

I'd put it up there with snorkeling in Cozumel, even pre Wilma Cozumel. Different though, we didn't see the typical coral formations that you usually see but swimming with turtles of that size in the wild is a great experience. Also saw rays, barracuda and tarpon. Even heard of many nurse shark sighting's.

We've snorkeled and scuba dived all over the Caribbean and I'd put that snorkeling with the turtles close to the top of our underwater exeriences.

The snorkeling is very good,if conditions are right -- not too choppy, or cloudy. The area we liked the most was the Yalku lagoon (which unfortunately you now have to pay to get in) and the area near it that flows out into the sea. Great fish, almost otherworldly.

Yes, Great lagoon, many colorful fish, quiet and serene. Cool water in these i loved that!!

We did see barracida while snorkeling and fish, The stingrays are visible from land if the water is clear that day , we saw many. Have heard Cozmel is also great. When do you leave? Carol Colorado

Hi All thanks so much for the great information...I have become very interested in (hopefully, if the turtles cooperate) seeing some sea turtles...

We actually won't be leaving until June of 09 due to the fact that we just came back about 3 weeks ago...haha (gotta look ahead)

I no sooner get home and I am thinking about what I want to do next year...I like to explore it and hear others experiences (this site is great and many are willing to share)

June 08 was our 2nd trip to Mexico and I think we are officially hooked...haven't looked anywhere else.

I just love thinking about and exploring next years trip (it is like a shiny stone in my pocket, on bad, snowy days here in Boston, I take it out and look at it and admire how beautiful it is...)

Sounds nuts huh? LOL

Well we think Akumal will be on our list of things to do next year...Any suggestions for the fact that we are in our 50's and not kids (although we think we are) would be great...

Thanks so much for all your replies.

Hi Neighbor!

We are also a 50s couple hooked on the PDC area (leaving for our 4th visit Saturday).

We are going to Akumal this time to snorkel (kind of hooked on that activity) and possibly Paamul (sp?)

If you are looking for a different excursion next year, you may want to check out Alltournative's Mayan Encounter. It was our favorite yet! We are no kids either and were able to enjoy the entire day - even the ziplining.

Have fun planning for next year - we do the same thing, starting the minute we get home (but off to Hawaii in 09, already thinking of PDC 10).

Jean, replied to your PM. I love all the notices here about us young-uns! I'm the same except I know now that I cannot get thru a horrible, gray, Detroit winter without my week in the sun! We also will be trying cenotes and ziplining-suggestions Sippi?
