when we depart for the USA do we go thru US Customs at Cancun or at our city of arrival (Kansas City)? When we last flew in from another country (Canada) we cleared in Vancouver and were then good to go at Denver and on to KC.

you go through customs in the country you leave and then the country you enter. so Mexican customs in Cancun and the first city you land in USA. both very easy if you follow rules and have nothing to hide.

I've waited a long time to use this line:-)

You ain't in Kansas no mo.

You are in Mexico and there are no US Customs officials in Mexico. You will meet all those folks when you get back to the States. Please stay behind the yellow line.

When we left the Cancun airport for Milwaukee, WI, at the gate they went through everyones carry ons. Would not let you even take a bottle of water you bought after sercurity onto the plane. I was afraid we were not going to get our booze we bought at the duty-free shop. But that was all waiting for us at the door of the plane. That has never happened to us before. We will be flying into Rockford, IL, wonder what will happen this time. Never had a problem with customs though.

well Oldtraveler i have lived in Kansas (the land of ahs) for nearly 50 years BUT was born in the land of 10,000 lakes so I could tell you was a Viking. I still have fond memories of that state...a great place to vacation I might add. Still..when yer sled breaks down and the Walleyes stop biting and ya cant ice fish on Mille lacs then hell why not head to Mexico! We dont have any natural lakes in KS but do have a few man made lakes.

last poster mentioned checking at the gate.

The gate is the airline check, not Mex. customs

e.g.

If you buy liquor at the Duty Free or water in the airport after Customs, you then take the liquids right to the canadian plane and board

If a US plane, they want the duty free store to deliver the booze to the plane , not you

So, different rules for US planes - go figure

PS: If you leave from major Canadian airports, they have a US Customs on site so when you arrive at the US airport, you don't have to clear customs. Would be nice if they did the same at Cancun

This year was the first year we had our booze delivered to the plane. Other years we were able to take it right from the duty-free shop into our carry ons. And taking bottled water onto the plane was no problem. I know it is different going into the US verses Canada. And I know the gate is not customs. Just commenting how it has changed and hoping we will have less problems this coming year.

Canada is a Pre-clear Country with US Customs personnel stationed in Canada. The other I do believe is the Virgin Islands. You will not see US Customs in Mexico. Your first port of entry into the US will be the first contact with US Customs after Immigrations. Departing Mexico will just require a passport check, return of your FMM, (Tourist Visa), then a Security Check.
