Staying on Gabriola Island, what would be some good day trips over to Nanaimo and surrounding areas?

We would recommend going to:

-walking along the Harbourside Walkway

-hiking and swimming at Newcastle Island Provincial Park

-lunch or dinner at Dinghy Dock Floating Pub and Bistro

-walking and swimming at Pipers Lagoon Park

-walking and swimming at Westwood Lake Park

-swimming at Nanaimo Aquatic Centre

-shopping and dining in the Old City Quarter

I second all of the earler posters suggestions. Check out the local events calendar in Nanaimo- there are so many great things happening year round you could take in. Are you travelling with kids? There is a great petting farm at Shady Mile, there is $2 swimming at the Bowen Park in the outdoor pool during the afternoons in the summer, if the weather isn't great there is Jumpin Jiminys indoor playcentre.
