My wife wasn't keen on visiting the National Railway Museum, but to both my surprise and hers, she actually loved it! As she's not keen at all keen on trains, this suggests to me that the place isn't only for rail buffs, so why not give it a try?

Her other favourite, apart from the Minster was walking the walls!

The walls include the Richard III museum. There's also Batley Hall, a hidden medieval gem, The Treasurer's House next to the Minster and river cruises are popular.

On the Ghost tour theme we now have a Ghost Bus! This black double decker does mainly evening tours from the train station with ghoulish actors on board. Details from Visit York.

Free daily guided walks by local volunteers depart from Exhibition Square. You can check the departure times via Visit York.

There is also a frequent daytime circular service of open top Sightseeing buses, with a 24 hr hop on hop off ticket. 20 stops around the City. They have a mutual discount with the one hour daytime City Cruises on the River Ouse with the York Boat Co.

York Brewery! Now that's my kind of tour!

Agree with The Walls & Fairfax House. Ghost tours are great!

Would recommend you gave Bettys a miss; over priced tourist tosh. Instead, try York's number one on TA restaurant or Oxo's.

York City Art Gallery may not sound a fun place, but it has recently undergone an eight million pound refurbishment and was short listed recently as one of the best Museums in the UK. Displays are not all traditional, there are some fun exhibits as well. On the way in, if you are looking for somewhere for tea/coffee, note the sign on the left directing you to the University Refectory which is in a fascinating building.

Maybe it's my poor English to blame, but!

From my own experience, the Afternoon Tea at Betty's is a real treat, therefore, not to be missed. What exactly have you booked? A table at the cafeteria, or the AT?

York Museum is pretty boring. It has left us underwhelmed. The Castle Museum - very special by all standards, and not to be missed!

Clifford's Tower is interesting, especially if you know what has happened there, and care...

The ramparts walk on the walls - free, and adorable. Especially, the Northern part - best views of the York Minster.

A boat cruise on River Ouse - extremely nice.

IMHO, York offers best ( and maybe cheapest ) pub crawl in UK. If you appreciate a good pint in a nice pub, York is the city to visit.

Hope it helped.

Yuri.

I agree with BruceYork above abut Betty's Tea Rooms. It's an expensive tourist trap.
