Hi all. I'm posting on a few forums around the Yorkshire/Derbyshire areas as I am looking for a hotel to stay in (preferrably with an indoor pool) where it is possible to do some walking (fairly easy, any distance) without getting in the car and ideally without using any kind of public transport. I know this is probably a long shot but if anyone does have any advice I would be very grateful.

Hi

Have a look at the Devonshire Arms Hotel at Bolton Abbey. This is beautiful walking country from the door of the Hotel. There are walks along the river Wharfe, to the ruins of the Abbey itself, to Simons Seat, to Barden Tower - the list is endless.

The Hotel itself has a pool and spa, and does wonderful food.

Hi, Your best bet is the Visit Britain website,

I would suggest maybe Hathersage in Derbyshire(just) and possibly somewhere like Ripon in Yorkshire

Matlock, Edale, Hadfield or Glossop would fit the bill

Of the four Derbyshire locations, i would choose Edale for the walking and Matlock for the larger range of hotels (Matlock is a bigger place)

the Derbyshire tourist website will have loads of hotel options in the three places I think

There's a public swimming pool at Settle and it's easy - if an uphill start - to get into the Dales, so any of the decent hotels there would be suitable.

Plus - despite your non-reliance on public transport - to travel up and down the train line to various other starting points

If you have a car then consider renting a lodge at Long Ashes near Grassington which has a pool but isn't too far away from some very nice restaurants

Hi Alanrow

Thank you for mentioning the train. Please can you let me know which train company runs in the area so I check times. Thank you.

You don't need to know the train company - just use www.nationalrail.co.uk

You could also check www.settle-carlisle.co.uk as they do organised walks between stations

Good station to go to is Horton in Ribblesdale as that gives you access to the Yorkshire 3 Peaks - www.3peakswalks.co.uk
