If you had to choose one favorite spot in the Dales, what would it be and why? :-)

Definitely Kettlewell and the Upper Wharfedale area. Fond memories, stunning location.

Hi,

Can't just pick one. We have been visiting the dales for many years, and have several favourites.

The waterfall at West Burton, Wensleydale. When the crowds are at Aysgarth, you can sit in perfect solitude.

The road above Askrigg, towards Hawes and the tiny settlement in Skellgill; walk along the lane by Lukes Barn, and climb the old farm track for some stunning views towards Hawes.

The top road between Middleham and West Witton, with racehorses to one side and views across to Castle Bolton and Redmire the other

In Swaledale, at Muker, follow the public footpath behind the Farmer's Arms and through the fields, crossing the river and follow the Penine Way. Again stunning views.

I would agree with the previous poster that Kettlewell in Wharfedale is a beautiful location, following the old pack horse route back into Coverdale gives wonderful views back down the Dale toward Kilsney.

There are many, many more and it would also be amiss not to mention sitting outside a variety of pubs enjoying a pint (or two) of Black Sheep and watching the world meander by!

I've struggled with this too - but I would have to say Scarhouse Reservoir in Nidderdale. A wild beautiful place, peace and solitude, dramatic and atmospheric. Plus - 10 minutes down the road and you are in the best restaurant I have ever had the pleasure to eat in - The Yorke Arms in the tiny village of Ramsgill. A walk around Scarhouse, and a meal in the Yorke Arms - it doesn't get any better.

Morgana made such great suggestions for our July trip to the Dales. What a fantastic area! Wow. It is our new favourite part of England. We are planning to return to holiday only in the Dales. Loved the Moors, too, but that is a different topic! :)

There are too many to list but amongst my favourites would be:

Kettlewell - utterly charming and beautiful

Keld - tiny and lovely - our ideal little village

Buttertubs Pass - glorious views

Upper Wharfedale - glorious views

Swaledale - glorious views

Nidderdale - glorious views

Dentdale (had a B&B there with glorious views - just fantastic). So sleepy and laid back and quiet.

Ramsgill (Yorke Arms - we loved it, Morgana!)

How is it possible to be able to live in such surroundings? I would constantly be pinching myself. At times I got overcome with emotion as the beauty was almost too much to take. Everywhere you look is a photograph. Indescribable.

For me it would be

the drive through Dovedale to Dent,

The falcon in Littondale,

The (short) walk to Desolation valley above Bolton Abbey

Walking down off Ingleborough into clapham past The Reservoir

Sitting in the square at Grassington, walking by the Wharfe or watching the Crag Race at Kilnsey Show.

all of it but mostly the road from Richmond through to Keld to Carlisle - the best road for barns and waterfalls!
