Our family from around the globe are having a get-together near Newton Stewart in Wigtonshire early Dec 2007 to celebrate our father's 90th birthday. It will be a surprise for him and we want to find a top-notch restaurant for the special evening within an hour's drive of N.S. (or if further afield could stay in hotel overnight). Help please!

Hi Mary Luisa,

I'll see if I can help recommend. Can you tell me any more about what type of food you are looking for and how many people?

That may help decide whether you would be better with a restaurant or a hotel with a function suite?

I'm not so clued up on restaurants over towards Newton Stewart but I will have a look around. If you were able to travel to Dumfries, a few suggestions there would be:

The Linen Room - for very 'top-notch' food, check out the website,

www.linenroom.com Lovely restaurant with tasty, beautifully presented food. Top end prices but good value.

Casa Mia - I know several people who have had 80th birthdays and 50th wedding anniversary meals here and have rated it highly.

Hi, just found your post. Living in Port William I'm finding new places to eat out all the time. The following are places I've eaten/had highly recommended by folks I trust.

The ClansmanRestaurant, Port William. Excellent food & value.

The Bladnock Inn, nr Wigtown. Lovely atmosphere, good food.

The Steam Packet Inn, Isle of Whithorn. We've always had excellent meals there, others not always so happy. Personal taste.

The Nether Barr Steading, nr Newton Stewart. Excellent service & food.

Know of and not visited.

Kirroughtree Hotel, Newton Stewart

Creebridge House Hotel, Newton Stewart.

Further afield but had highly recommended.

Balcary Bay Hotel, Auchencairn. Expensive but wonderful.

Tigh Na Mara Hotel, Sandhead, nr Stranraer. Wonderful atmosphere and food.

Campbells Restaurant, Portpatrick. Wonderful food.

If I can be of any further help do contact me, best of luck.

You might want to look into craigadam which is about 25 miles from newton stewart but they provide accommodation and is a fantastic place for a family get together. It is a 5 star B&B but also with self catering units. There is a beautiful drawing room and Celia will make up a menu to suit all, and very relaxed party atmosphere. She can also get musicians etc in if you wish.

Check out http://www.craigadam.co.uk/

She has an "honesty bar" policy, and men adore the snooker room!

Wonderful place for a special occasion.

And absolutely by far the best food you will have in the region!
