Any advise on a car rental company in Inverness?

Hi everyone!

We'll be arriving in Inverness from Kyle by train in the evening, then we're thinking of hiring a car in the morning so we can go see Culloden battlefield, Clansman harbor for a short Loch Ness Cruise, then head down to Aviemore and Rotheimurchus Estate for pony trekking. If possible, we could leave the car there I suppose at the end of the day because we'll be needing to catch a train to Stirling. OR we could just keep the car all the way to Stirling, and turn it in there the next day?

I've already gotten encouragement a while back about driving on the other side of the road, but I'm nervous about possible bad weather. However, I like the freedom having a car as well.

If you know of a reasonable car company that we could possibly take to Stirling, also wondering about added expense like fuel (I know it's expensive) and insurance?

Thanks in advance!

Two years ago Avis gave us the best deal in Inverness -- and I checked with 18 rental agencies and wholesalers. Europcar would have been cheaper except that they charged a hefty fee for "before hours" (6 AM) drop-off.

You will probably want to rent in downtown Inverness, not at the airport. As I recall, Budget and Thrifty have offices near the train station. But one or both of the offices were closed Saturday afternoon, which is when we originally wanted to drop off our car. Some of the rental agencies downtown were closed all day Sunday.

You may need to use a spreadsheet on this!

Our mid-sized Vauxhall ate up $90 worth of gas at each fill-up. We filled it up twice, once on Orkney mainland and once near Kylesku.

we're off to scotland in march for 3 weeks. Got the best deal from this site:

About $400 quid for 21 days for automatic, cheaper for manual

I've had very good experience with Thrifty in Inverness. Great value for money. Why don't you email them and ask if that you plan is doable.

podo - if you check yell.com directory and put 'car hire' and 'inverness' into the search you will get a list of companies. Its probably worth emailing a few to check if they allow drop off at another location and how much they charge.

podo - when are you off to Scotland? I think it's before me (end of May). Please write a report. You're doing everything we're doing (including the pony trekking). I'd appreciate your reviews!

I put in 'car hire inverness' into google (we're staying at aviemore, but there seemed to be more choice at Inverness, so we'll take the train there). There was a site where you could pick up the car at the station. Sorry, forgot the name, but it looked reasonable.

Ask up front about the extra driver fee, too, if you plan to share the driving.

Also, keep checking the major rentals' websites. Like airline fares, car rental rates change. I was able to lock in the Avis rate on a "low" day. (Usually the discounters have better rates, however.)

Aviemore has only one rental place. Even though we didn't need the car for the first part of our trip, it was cheaper to rent in Inverness to drive the car down to Aviemore. The cost for two people to get back and forth to Aviemore from Inverness Airport (bus and train) was more than the extra days' rental. We were then able to get the weekly, not daily, rental rate. (We then drove to Orkney and Wester Ross for the fun vacation part of our trip.)
