We have just returned from a week in Orkney, (our fourth visit), during which we had dinner at The Creel (fourth visit also). In our opinion this restaurant is not the 'jewel in the crown' it once was. The food is good but not outstanding and very expensive 'London-type' prices with decidedly average service spoil the experience. We feel the place has had its day somewhat. A shame, because it used to be our favourite.
On recommendation of friends we visited the restaurant at the Foveran Hotel near Kirkwall and had a delicious dinner in pleasant, airy surroundings with friendly and attentive service. Our bill for two with drinks, three courses, wine and coffee came to just under seventy pounds - extremely good value.
