Pitlochery or Perth area. |
|
ok, I have exhausted myself reading this and other sites on where to stay. I am looking for some place quiet for 4 (2 adults 2 kids). I would prefer some sort of water/waterfall/stream etc but find that most places dont list all of this info. Or they put up a pic and dont say where it is really from. I looked at this place online Dail na Coille garden cottage. I found it listed as just Garden Cottage too by the same owners but no reviews. For us, since we are USD $ a splurge would be about 120 pounds. Any thoughts of some great little place I may be missing. A pool/hot tub would be great, but I can probably get that in Edinburgh or london...Thanks so much! oh, and I can go outside this area too. We will drive into Scotland near Dumfries then on to Stirling first then on to perth then up to pictlochery, killiecrakie, back thru perth, dunfermline then edinburgh |

Have a look at Craigatin House www.craigatinhouse.co.uk It's in Pitlochry, situated on the main road (just means it's easy to find - it's very quiet). We stayed there for a couple of nights last September when our family was visiting from Illinois, USA. They loved it. It's just a B&B so no pool or anything but really only the bigger hotels here have them. Scotlands Hotel in Pitlochry I know has a pool and outdoor hot tubs are really unusual here - we just don't have the weather. Most hotels with a pool will probably have an indoor hot tub too. Pitlochry has plenty of opportunity to walk to waterfalls, by rivers etc. Craigatin is within walking distance to the centre of Pitlochry. When you visit Pitlochry, one of the best places to eat in the area is at the 'Moulin Inn' in the village of Moulin about a mile or 2 outside of Pitlochry. It's a bit too far to walk from the town - drive there. The hotel has a restuarant but the best place to eat is in the pub. They do lots of typical scottish fayre and the portions are huge! You can't book a table so get there early as it's always busy. They have several large tables so even if you find all the tables occupied at one end, people are usually happy to share the other end of their table! You don't say what time of year you're visiting but it has tables outside in the summer. Have a great trip.

You don't make it clear if you are looking for a hotel or for self catering accommodation? Are you spending a week in one place or are you touring? What time of year are you visiting?

FErg, thanks, I will save your post and check it out.

Goodwitch,You don't make it clear if you are looking for a hotel or for self catering accommodation? Are you spending a week in one place or are you touring? What time of year are you visiting? We could do either, we will have a car so I could pick up something ffrom the store/grocery and make it however we will probably only be spending one night there. Prefer to self cater in london and edinburgh as we will have at least two nights at each.
|
My point was that if you are visiting in the high season, Easter till September, it's hard to find self catering places that will take you for less than a week. It's possible in the low season, but otherwise you might need to stay in hotels or B&Bs.

Unfortunately we have to travel about this time next year. My daughter will graduate from Highschool (cant wait!) and they have a later year end than normal. So I think June first is the absolute earliest we can come. And it will be for 14-15 days with airflight so only one night in Pitlochery area. Should the drive times around this area be averaged on less than 40 miles per hour?
|
I suggest using www.aa.com routeplanner section. Our AAA. I've always found them to be pretty accurate on working out journey times as well as directions obviously but they take into account the type of road, average speed on that road etc. and it's useful just to check out various routes to see what's feasible.

Ferg, Thanks I have been using aa for planning but acouple people were very adamant that I should gague everything on 40 miles per hour so when I saw faster times on our driving portions I got concerned.

Don't know if this is helpful but I'll throw it out for you to consider. We are travelling to Scotland in August and on the advice of folks on this website and Fodors we have booked two nights at the Murraypark Hotel in Crieff. We are four so will have a family room. It is attached to the Crieff Hydro which has extensive fcilities (including indoor pool) but the Murraypark is much cheaper. Think we are paying $360 per night for all of us with breakfast and dinner. Think that's a good deal given the terrible exchange rate.
|
cc I think I will top out at $250 us plus figuring in VAT too.....whew....too much for me but I certainly appreciate the info.
