I moved down to Ayr 2 years ago, and I guess I have a fairly independent view of the good restaurants in the area.
The Taj food is magnificent- ignore any old posts from competitors pretending to be customers. I rate the Tandoori Makhani Masala to be up there with the best- such as the Rogan Josh from the Koh I Noor at Charing Cross, Glasgow, or Lamb Bhoonas from any of the Harlequin Ashokas.
The only thing that lets it down is the pakora- but the onion bahjis are soooperb- make sure you get the "pink sauce". AND try the Special Jaat Paat starter- magnificent!!!
In Ayr the Rupee Room does a great curry, although slightly hotter than usual, and the restaurant itself can feel a little cramped. Great food though.
Another magnificent restaurant is the Maharani in Troon. Anything on the menu is good. I mean it.
Talking of pakora- the best can be found in the New Kashmir Tandoori Restaurant in the Sandgate in Ayr- no pink sauce but the pakora itself is delish- and the curries are great and good value- especially the tea time deals. The owner,"Happy", is a great guy.
If you just want a HUUUGE amount of good pakora to take away, then you can do no better than the Shere on Main Street, Ayr. They also do a lot of other good take-away food.
If you don't like curries- why are you reading this?? Seriously, try Cecchinis or Chestnuts in Ayr, or treat yourself in Elliots in Prestwick or Scotts in Troon.
A great area for great food.
