Traditional Irish music on a CD?

Hi --

Thanks again for helping produce a wonderful trip this summer. One of the absolute highlights was listening to Irish folk music at St. James Church in Dingle. Two women performers from the Blasket Island were especially powerful. Two men performed with traditional instruments and one of the woman played the accordion. (Alas, we didn't get a program, but we will treasure our ticket stubs.)

Now that I am buying Xmas presents (yes, late), I was wondering if anyone could recommend a CD that would be like the music we heard that July evening? I've been going through playlists online and haven't found the same folk sound we heard in St. James.

Also, anyone going to Dingle next summer, the concerts are a MUST!

The accordion is very popular in Co.Kerry. Certain traditional instruments are popular in certain counties , for example concertina in Co.Clare and fiddle in Co.Leitrim.

Her is a list of some well know accordion players. However it is difficult to find audio clips of their music on the internet.

Seamus Begley is one of the most well known accordion players from this region and hosts many music programmes on Irish T.V.

You can hear some small clips here of one of his albums preforming with Steve Cooney.

Tony McMahon from Co. Clare is one of my fav players and you can hear him on this clip on irish t.v preforming with Noel Hill on concertina.

Joe Burke from Galway is also a nice player.

De Danann are also worth listening to

One of the best Irish Music specialist shops is Claddagh Records in Dublin. You may be able to contact them online for advise.

Huge thanks. At Claddagh Records I hit paydirt, just typing in Blasket and recognizing Aine ui Laoithe and Eilin Ni Chearna as the two female singers we saw in St. James Church. I am even more impressed that we were able to see them perform, since these two women have a fantastic reputation. (No Surprise!)
