best road map to purchase
Save

Hi All,

I'm planning a trip to the south west and would like advice for the best road maps available. After much frustration with mapquest and yahoo I don't trust online maps and much prefer something with more information.

I've seen Micheline and AA. I would like something that has the historical sites noted.

Thanks in advance.

Card Nut, the Ordnance Survey of Ireland do a wide variety of maps from large to small scale.

You can buy on-line and they ship very reasonably. I have used them myself and was very pleased with them. The site is secure.

I hate to say it but the best map we have had so far is the map from Dan Dooley Car Rental. I wouldn't recommend their cars but if you get a hold of one of their maps it will help you...

Hi Linda

I concur with beanalainn: Ordnance Survey maps are the best : very detailed, with historical sites, and you do appreciate such fine detailed maps when you drive on smaller roads: my Michelin map was useless for the degree of details needed on the premises. Ordnance Survey's are like the most detailed Michelin maps for France, if you have ever seen them.

The map I always recomend is the one pinned next to me on the wall.

Michelin 712 National Ireland.

Other than that if you are totaly brave or stupid such as myself the you can get a range of ordanance survey maps, but by the time you need one of those you are better of knocking on the nearest door.

Tony, Tony, Tony,

I am neither totally brave nor totally stupid. I have a range of OSI Maps from the Province to a Page to the very detailed.

I use different maps for different situations. I like the book maps when driving (move from page to page) and the page maps when exploring or delving into an area in more detail.

I have had AA Maps of Ireland and Collins Maps of Ireland but my favourite are the OSI

This is what I have

and I absolutely love it.

Bean, we have crossed each others roads enough for you of all people to know my hummor, It's me that takes turnings down grass infested lanes with hedges that touch the wing mirrors.

My point is that for general use and without going overboard if you carry only one map I opt for the 712.

Regards Tony.

Honking big thanks Beanalainn! I've used Michelin and OSI and prefer the OSI. But I had no idea that OSI produced this handy spiral map. Better yet.

Thanks All,

I have emailed OSI and have requested a place to purchase a map once I arrive in Ireland, unless I have the good fortune to run into some poor unfortunate sole that has rented from Dan Dooley and nik one from the glove box!!!!

cheers!

I own a Michelin 712 National Ireland map. It's good for a wall, or to have an idea where you are, while travelling by bus ... or for general planning purpose. I have travelled with it to Ireland, and also travelled in the same car as people using Ord. Survey maps to explore an area: OS cannot possibly be beaten. It is so easy to get lost in the small and beautiful minor roads in Ireland... and Michelin will do just next to nothing to help you when you're going away from motorways.

May you buy OS, Linda, for your travelling. You will want nothing else when you see how good they are.

beanalainn,

what type of map would you recommend for traveling throughout Ireland. I checked the site and it seems they offer general Ireland maps for tourists and driving, as well as area maps (Kerry, Dingle, etc...). Is it better to have a map of each area or would the tourist or driving map be suitable?

thanks
