Thinking of doing a trip in July.
Can't decide which place to go.
We have never been to either.
Which place is the most scenic?
Well of course you're posting on the Ireland forum so everyone will say it's Ireland...and on the UK forum they'll say it's Scotland lol.
Both places have wonderful scenery.
So true. I thought about that after I posted it.
Well, for those who have been to both which one do you like better and why?
Ireland doesn't have the Midgies - the bloodsucking flies that are like Mozzies. Scotland does!!
Scenery is spectacular in both. Edinburgh is a great city to visit. So is Dublin.
They drink Whisky, we drink Whiskey.
We all speak a form of gaelic, they have the bagpipes, we have the uileann (elbow) pipes.
There's good Rugby in both countries as well.
Even though my loyalties lie with Ireland, I would have to say that for scenery Scotland would win. It has everything from the Lowlands to the Highlands and fantastic islands (which I have yet to see, but keep hearing about).
However, although the cultures do have a lot of similarities, there are a lot of differences in the the character of the two countries. I find the Scots very friendly but completely different in attitudes to the Irish.
You really have to see both countries - but not in the same trip.
Well if I was deciding (and there are a lot of similarities) I would consider the difference in cost. How do flights and accommodation compare price-wise? What's the exchange rate like for your currency for Euro V Sterling? Could make a big difference to your spending money...
The one big difference I see between the two (having lived in scotland for a year and being from Ireland) is that scotland is a bit more run-down than Ireland. Ireland is definately wealthier and this reflects in the quality of the pubs, restaurants and hotels.
Also - you can't beat the Irish pub (and the craic!) Scottish pubs are mostly brewery owned and employ a manager (as opposed to most Irish ones which are run by the owner) Makes a BIG difference.
Why not do both?? You can get really cheap flights with ryanair and Aer Lingus from Dublin - Glasgow/Edinburgh.
I am from Scotland but living in Dublin. I have to say I find very little differences between the two! Both are fun countries, pleasant scenery, vibrant cities, busy pub culture. Scotland has better Indian food - better junk food in general! I find Ireland a little more expensive. If you have any more specific questions let me know. It is hard to gauge which might suit you better without knowing what you're looking for & what you enjoy.
shawnndoe, having been to both, and not living in either, my vote is for ireland...now don't get me wrong, i loved scotland too but ireland is for me....i will say i like the fact there seem to be more old villages in scotland that aren't too modern yet and i love that but you can't beat the irish folks for hospitality, not that the scots aren't hospitable....
The original question was - which is most scenic. I still say Scotland. The scenery is stupendous, wilder, more majestic and just more of it.
irishover is right...i didn't answer the scenic part....ireland
Scotland wins everytime.
More scenic and for whoever says it's run down well time for another trip there.
Culture, fine food and some of the most friendly people on earth.
