My wife and a friend and I are spending 4 nights in Kilkenny from 1 September. We have a choice of lodging at Number 14, Beechview Apartments, or Carriglea B&B. I've found very positive feedback on Carriglea but nothing on the others. We are interested in proximity to the town center, and spaciousness of rooms, Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

Oops.

I just discovered that there is no room at the Carriglea, but there is at Fanad House which looks very good.

Fanad House is just fine. Laragh House is even better. Kilkenny is a good place to stay. There is a lot to do and see around there.

Beechview Apartments are on the Ring Road, so would not, in my view, be within walking distance of the town. You can walk it, but it would be a longish walk and would involve walking down John Street, something people are not recommended to do late at night at weekends. So if you want to stay at Beechview, use your car or a taxi at night. On the other hand, they are ideally situated for reaching all areas in the county for driving as you don't have to deal with the town traffic. You do have the advantage of self-catering and there is a convenience store in the complex, or a large supermarket a short drive away.

Fanad House is fine and very central, but can be busy at weekends with "party people". I have not seen the rooms, but maybe other posters can report back on that. Laragh House is a little further out and looks good, but again I have not seen the rooms.

What about Dunromin? It is supposed to be walking distance to town. I am staying there in a few weeks and will post a review when I get back home.

Dunromin is in the same part of town as Beechview Apartments. It is very nice, but suffers from the same problem as being on the far side of John Street, which is rapidly becoming a no-go area in Kilkenny in the early hours of weekends. So if you are staying there, use a taxi late at night.

thanks for the advice

it will be our first night in Ireland so we will likely be very tired after an overnight flight and go to bed early.

Don't let me put you off going into Kilkenny for the night. Generally safe, but just avoid John Street between the river and the station, especially at weekends.

Hi beechview is a new complex with their own taxi service which i found to be the best taxis in ireland...the rooms are spotless and very big and all have balconey's they have 24 hr security...and the guy who own's them takes no nonsense..the complex has secure parking and a lovely convience store with home made soup and bread....its 7 mins walk from the city center and the only time you avoid john street is at 2am when theres 2000 people coming out on to a street that was built for horses and carts back in aincent times...

Regards

Gerry.

HI Gerry

Thanks for your information about Beechview, which I often mention in replies. However, 7 mins walk from the City Centre? If you are the bionic man maybe! You can walk it but more like 20 mins.
