 Brittanny holiday in July

Hi,

Our family, 2 adults and three children aged 6,7,10 are planning to holiday in Brittany for a week in late July. Can someone please advise us of areas to stay in. We would like to rent a gite or any kind of self catering. We are open minded about the area we stay in. What would weather be like at this time. I would appreciate some help. Thanks

Mathair,

We do the Keycamp Thing. Our kids are 6, 10, 14. We take a large mobile home 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom.

The kids clubs are good, you have a lot of facilities on site and it becomes like a community - the kids make friends, the parents make friends and people look out for the kids.

We do the house thing in Ireland, but the camp sites are great in France in the summer.

If you want any more info, let me know.

Thanks Beanalainn,

We, like you, would be travelling from Ireland. Do you fly or sail. Which way do you find economical. I checked Brittany ferries Cork to Roscoff and it is working out about €1443. to travel 28th July.

Thanks again

Hi Mathair,

We go via the UK - we have a child with a health issue, so we don't like to be too far from hospitals if there is a problem. We take the highspeed from Dublin to Holyhead, drive down to outside London and then go from Dover to Calais.

It takes a couple of days, but we usually do something in London on the way back.

If you like e-mail me on beanalainnlimerick@yahoo.com and I can give you all the details.

Keycamp do the ferry bookings as part of the package.

Take Care.

BTW - This year - I have not told hubby yet!! But I'm planning to drive to Dun Laoghaire the night before, stay in a hotel, then take the 90 minute crossing and try to get to Dover in a day. Shhhh :o))

Hi

We are also 2 adults with 3 children under 12. We have used Keycamp for a number of years now - can't fault them on price when compared to other operators and the it is cheaper to book the ferry as part of the Keycamp package than it is to book direct with the Ferry operators.

Brittany is a great choice at that time of year, the weather is good and there is plenty to do on and off the campsites - look at Benodet La pointe st Gilles with Keycamp.co.uk - I would highly reccomend it!

If you have any specific questions I am happy to help if I can.

Hi,

I have used Eurocamp many times, several in Brittany, and have always had a good experience.

If you are looking for a gite, I would strongly recomend Brittany Ferries. If you book a gite with them it is very good value because the ferry crossing is inclusive. They also have a good website.

If you know which area you are interested in I could give further advice as I have travelled through Brittany extensively. My personal favourites are Perros Guirrec (archetypal Beach Resort - so beautiful), St Cast (a little closer to the shorther sea crossings) and Pont Aven in the south.

My advice if you've got kids this young is definitely don't go for a gite, unless it is really well equipped and near a beach (which means very expensive at this time of year). Many gites are very 'rustique', quite isolated and you'll end up with kids moaning about having nothing to do - which means not much of a holiday for the grown ups! As other contributors have suggested, go the campsite route, under canvas or a mobile home is your best option. The big camping companies are well represented in Brittany, and they're all very family oriented, most sites being really well equipped with pools, slides, shops, evening activities. One other option is these lodge style developments which are creeping onto French camp sites. They feel a bit more authentic, and if you like something more solid over your head, these are great (Yello is the main operator). Frankly you're spoilt for choice, everyone has their own favourites. But it's difficult to go wrong. Good luck.

Hi Mathair,

Irish Ferries is slightly cheaper than Brittany but Rosslare is not as close for you and there is no comparison between the actual boats `IMO Irish Ferries is quite grotty. We are flying this year & hiring a car as there is little difference in cost ~ and I'd move mountains to avoid the boat! Hope this is of some help

Hi

Ryan Air Fly directly to Nantes from Shannon - always a plus for people from our part of the world!!. If you book in time flights are very reasonable (€140 for 2 adults last June return including bags & tax)

I don't have children but I think Carnac is a good place for families. It is a little less than 2 hours by car from Nantes and driving in France is really easy, well sign posted & good roads. We stayed in LaBaule and Quiberon. Quiberon is near Carnac but is very quiet. I really liked La Baule and there are lots of lovely places around there for day trips like Le Croisic. Brittany is lovely and I'm sure that no matter where you choose you will have a great time.

Hi

**this will depend on what you expect from a holiday in Britanny**

if you want a fun packed adventure holiday i can't help. however if you want to relax take life a little easier then:-

myself an my family also consisting of 3 children aged 3,6,15 have been on holiday in Brittanny and enjoyed the area of huelgoat (Pronounced WELLGAT).

The weather for that time of year is generally warm/hot (don't quote me)

i would recommend having a car as to see Brittanny you will need to travel.

i hope this helps
