Where is the best place to go for Christmas markets? We're thinking of Berlin, is this right?
Also any recommended hotels? I'm going with my family
We very much enjoy Berlin and it is wonderful for the markets. We will be there for this season for the 3rd time in December.
Berlin has so much to see and do and the markets are just a bonus.
We stay in Mitte and like the Melia Berlin. Also enjoyed the Westin Grand. Both have large rooms and good locations, Melia is perfectly located for access to public transport. There are many hotels in this area.
Don't miss the store decorations at KaDeWe Department store - and their gourmet floor is a favorite of ours. Better than Harrods with wonderful small eateries to choose from.
Ok great, so you would recommend here over any other places in Germany for christmas then?
We have been to many places in Germany during Advent season and they all have their own charms. It completely depends on what you are looking for. You mentioned Berlin, specifically, so that is what I responded to.
We love Berlin as a destination at any time as it has the things we enjoy when we travel.
We have also enjoyed Munich several times, Bamberg, Regensburg, Wurzburg, Garmisch and a dozen other cities.
We do not go to the markets to shop, rather we enjoy the festivities, food, music, ambiance. Some are famous, like the one in Nuremberg, which is one of our least favorites.
Are you looking for city? town? village? shopping? musuems? nightlife?
You asked a very generic question to which there is no one answer.
Berlin has a lot going for it, but Christmas Markets are rather an added afterthought for the city. If you want a traditional Christmassy atmosphere you need to look at smaller cities and towns with more traditions in this regard - mostly in the catholic parts of the country, e.g. more to the south or in the Rhineland. Dresden has an excellent huge market too, which is not yet completely "touristified".
Ok great thanks for your help, its with the family so i think we need to seat down and decide whether we want berlin or the smaller cities as you say.
The Berlin markets were fun--we visited 3 or 4 of them and they all had a different "feel" about them.
We liked Bamberg's Christmas markets, though they were smaller than that of a bigger city. Bamberg also has a walking route to view nativity scenes around the city.
Some people don't like some of the larger more famous markets like the one in Nuernberg because they are so crowded, but to some people that is part of the fun and excitement of the markets. It just depends on your personality, I guess.
