Train Tickets for Germany & Austria

We are traveling to Austria and Germany this month and wondered about buying train tickets. We will be traveling from Vienna to Salzburg and later Munich. Is it cheaper to buy individual day tickets or by a pass for the entire trip of 10 days? Is it easy to transfer trains and find our way around the stations? We have never traveling via trains in Europe before.

For travel in Austria, use the ÖBB website to find train schedules and fares. http://www.oebb.at/vip8/oebb/en/

For travel in 2nd class, there is a special ticket called the ‘1-PLUS-Freizeit-Ticket für die 2.Klasse.’ To travel from Vienna to Salzburg with this ticket, the first traveler would pay 44.40 € and adult travelers 2 to 5 would pay 22.20 €.

To travel from Salzburg to Munich you could use the Bayern-Ticket. This is a group ticket for up to 5 travelers that is only valid on regional trains after 9 AM on weekdays and anytime on weekends. The ticket costs 27 € from a machine or 29 € from a ticket window. At the Salzburg station you would buy this ticket from the Deutsches Bahn DB machine or office, not from the ÖBB.

For travel in Germany use the DB website to find train schedules and fares. http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

To find trains on the DB website were you could use the Bayern Ticket, under Means of transport: change the default setting from ‘standard search’ to ‘only local transport’.

Each Germany Federal State has Länder Tickets. An overview is at - http://www.bahn.de/-S:PtVORd:d9E-jtNNYyadcNNNNPIM/p/view/international/englisch/travelservice/laender_tickets.shtml

Major cities and regions also have group day tickets for travel on public transportation.

Train travel is very easy. You will not have to change trains between Vienna and Salzburg, nor between Salzburg and Munich. Those routes have direct trains.

BTW Depending on your final destination in Munich, you may want to get off the train at Munich's Ostbahnhof, then take the U or S bahn to your final destination (like Marienplatz). This way you avoid the massive and hectic main train station.

You can purchase a Eurail pass while here in the US if you have the time. Go to their website.

You can ONLY buy an Eurail pass outside of Europe - but that´s not the point. The point is that it is insanely expensive compared to the short trips Rgarick is planning.

The DB sells a few of the various Eurail Passes at major stations in Germany. i.e. Only the 5 or 10 day German Rail Passes are sold in Germany.
