We're planning a trip to Munich in December for the Christmas markets and are bringing our 3-year old son with us. We're looking for a hotel that is child-friendly and where the rooms are a good size with a comfortable seating area where we can relax after putting him to bed. The main contenders so far are Le Meridien, Eden Hotel Wolff, Dorint Sofitel/Novotel, Mercure City Center, Conrad Hotel de Ville and Torbrau. It's difficult to judge room size from the hotel photos and descriptions, so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Any other tips on things to do/see to entertain an active 3-year old would also be great!

Hi Dededub

I am planning a trip to Munich in October with my child(?) too. She is 17!!! I have found out that Munich has a good zoo, which I imagine your son would enjoy. Google Munich Zoo and you should find it. The Bavaria Film Studios might have things to interest him. More info on http://www.muenchen.de (in numerous languages) . I have found this site useful for all sorts of stuff. Assuming that your son isn't used to travelling on trams I am sure he would enjoy that too.

The tower at the Olympic park looks good too. !

As you can tell I am just adding more ideas as I remember them!

Can't give any advice about hotels but I think the hotel we are staying at will probably be like a Holiday Express (a good one I hope). It sounds like you need something with a bigger room.

I wish I was going in December. It should be beautiful with all the

decorations. I have been to Christmas markets in Frankfurt and we even have one every year in Edinburgh now and they are great with the smell of gluhwein and sausages floating around. Mmmm.

Viel Gluck (Good luck or lots of luck ) as the Germans say.

Just returned from Munich with our three year-old daughter. We call it the "Lions and Cherubs" tour because she loved the painted lions posted all over Munich and she enjoyed visiting churches to see the cherubs.

Hotel: Stay as close to Marianplatz as you can. Your son will never tire of the Glockenspiel and with a toddler in tow, you want to be close to the action. (We stayed at Blauer Bock, which is very basic, but located across from the Viktualienmarkt and five minutes away from the Marianplatz.) Avoid staying at a hotel near the train station because the walk to Marianplatz is never as short as the hotels advertise, especially in wet mushy snow with a cold kid.

Do:

Deutschesmuseum. Way too much stuff to do there.

Puppet/marionette show. Saw a marionette show in Vienna this trip and my daughter cannot stop talking about it a month later. Amazing that she sat still for the 1 hour 10 minute version of "The Magic Flute"! I looked up puppet shows in Munich but ended up going out with old friends instead.

Kaffee und kuchen (perhaps at Arzmiller). What child would not enjoy a hot chocolate?

Don't:

Toy museum. I've always thought of it as being for adults who love toys, but I could be wrong. We didn't go there for that reason.
