Any Advice appreciated for up and coming trip to Amalfi ?

HI there,

We are hoping to spend 8 days in the Almafi coast in the 02nd week of September. We hope to Fly into Naples on Sept 10 and head for Almafi and stay there for 4 nights. We hope to stay in the following hotel - Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi. Is this hotel in a good location for exploring? What days trips can you make from here as we would like to see as much as possible during these days – Sorrento/ Capri and any other areas people would suggest?

We then hope to spend the last 3/4 nights on the Island of Ischia. We are a young couple in are late 20s and are really looking forward to exploring the beauty the Almafi coast has to offer while enjoying beautiful food and enjoying a few drinks at night.

I hear Ischia is beautiful and I would like to spend our time there chilling and relaxing on the beach – Is that possible? Also does anyone have any recommendations on where to stay whilst there? I was thinking of maybe seeing if it’s possible to hire an apartment for the 4 nights?Look forward to hearing any advice/tips people can offer?

Thanks a mill,

Sarah

Sarah, hi! Perhaps I can help with the latter part of your trip?

We certainly think Ischia's beautiful - indeed that's one of the many reasons why we've spent the last 9 years here!

The island's divided into six 'comune'.....

... and the Ischia Ponte end of the city of Ischia (over on the eastern end of the north coast, near the islet of the 'Castello Aragone') has always been our favourite.

There are a few apartments in this area amongst those on this list...

Although the schools are open by then, mid-September is still fairly busy, and a 4-day let could be hard to find - but otherwise there's a wide choice of hotels, with something for almost any budget!

Photos? The island - place-by-place etc, with a few tips...

For less partisan opinions than mine, try the press articles gathered together here:

... and to see what's likely to be going on, this link will get you the visitor magazine (mostly bilingual!) from last September...

Those OK as a start?

Thanks a mill Peter, thats fantastic. I am now considering perhaps spending the whole time on Ischia and using it as a base to see the surrounding areas - would you advice this? Thanks again

That was what we used to do when vacationing in the area.... one day either exploring Ischia or on the beach, then the next away - and so on... although the hydrofoil and ferry fares can mount up a bit!

Plenty of excursions available, which are easier, although it's rare to get very much by way of English commentary. One line's 2011 brocure is here...

http://www.ischiasea.com/images/pdf/ischiasea-2011.pdf

... with the 2012 prices - for those of them that have started so far - on:

(Friends who were stopping with us did the Amalfi / Positano trip - but took a small bag with them, and spent a night in a hotel at one or the other, returning on the next afternoon's boat... which seemed a good way to see more, with having the hassle of a full relocation?)

Otherwise you can arrange things for yourselves - with the day trip over to Capri probably the simplest:

(... and, conversely, Sorrento a bit difficult, due to those timings!)

... but just about any of these are within reach by public transport:

... although some require less of an early start than others!

................................

Here on the island, this is one of our favourite events at that time of year...
