 Hotel recommendation near Termina Station

Hi,

My husband and I will be arriving Rome in mid March and would like to get a room near the railroad station. We want to spend a day at Pompeii, as well. So being near the station might help. Can you recommend an inexpensive hotel motel or whatever that is close by the station? Anything under a hundred dollars a night would be helpful.

Thanks.

How many days will you be there total? You need to be near the station to use it one time?

Hi,

I used to contract hotels in Rome. There are a lot of cheap hotels in the area, so you wont have a problem, however its a pretty grim place (stations are in any city I find). The closer you can get to the centre (e.g. spanish steps) the better...

The whole place is fairly easy to walk (or take buses etc) so dont worry if you find yourself a little away from the termini...

The train to Pompeii is the Circumvesuviana - a regional commuter train from Naples - staying in Rome makes for a very long day trip.

I have stayed at this hotel near termini more than once and liked it. it was clean, the pictures were accurate, breakfast was good with eggs and the bathroom was above average with no water on the floor and plenty of hot water.

You can walk there from Termini if you have a single Rollie of luggage.

It is a long day from Rome to do a day trip to Pompeii. You will need to take Trenitalia from Termini to Naples Centrale station. That akes 1.5 to 2 hours. At Naples centale station you buy tickets on the main level for the Circumvesuviana. It's only sometihng like 2 erups one way. You board the train with the ultimate destination of Sorrento in the basement. it akes abput 40 min of travel time to get there.

a hundred dollars is only currently 71.40 euros, aqnd it might get worst.

I didn't think Termini was all that grim.

If you want to see grim, check out sections of Naples. Termini is mostly what I would call Modern and charmless.

Oh for christsakes Lupaling, don't you do enough Naples bashing over in the Naples forum?? Who here has asked a question about Naples?? How was that comment supposed to inform the person asking for a recommendation on a place to stay near the train station??

Here is a recommendation for a nice, inexpensive room two blocks from the train station: The MaryElen B&B. I believe a room for two in March will cost you around 70 euros a night.

And though it's completely irrelevant to your request, I feel compelled to point out that Naples is a historically rich and fascinating place. Not to everyone, but to many people nevertheless.

Hoo boy.

Sorry, I brought it up.

people are always bringing up how shady and dirty the area around Termini is, and it was jsut a comparision. maybe i should just start bringing up Termini-bashing every time someone hints that the area around Termini might not be a good place to stay in.

there was a recent thread about how dirty Rome was because of all the graffiti and dog poop. maybe that whole thread was really Rome-brashing? Rome is a vibrant, great place to visit also, so negative comments about it shouldn't be tolerated either?

Its a good point though...Naples is worse for sure and the comparison is valid (I should justify my comment about the Termini with that in mind...its not that awful, but the rest of Rome is pretty impressive in comparison). If you are a visitor to the city, why pick one of the dullest areas in which to holiday?!

"...the comparison is valid.."

I'm sorry, but I've seen a good bit of Rome and a good bit of Naples, and the comparison is not valid.

Is there a large city on the planet that does not have it's grim areas? Yes, Naples certainly has them, and so does Rome (but the Termini area is not one of them, in my opinion). Both cities also have areas that are very lovely.

It is a completely pointless comparison offered by someone who has spent very little time in Naples, who has seen only a small part of the city. She dismisses an entire 2,5000 year-old city largely on the basis of anecdotes about bums at the port having harassed her daughter. That is why it constitutes Naples-bashing.

If someone were to say a lot of nasty things about Rome without having actually spent any real time in the city, that would be Rome-bashing.

Those of you who are befuddled by my reaction are probably unaware of Lupaling's consistent rain of negativity about Naples in the Naples forum. As someone who loves Naples, it does get under my skin at times - not because she doesn't like Naples, but rather because she's never even given the city a chance.
