Republic Day???
Save

I just found out (thank you Mikesao) that one of the dates I was planning to travel to Rome is "Republic Day."

What exactly goes on on Republic Day? Should I change my travel dates? Will everything be shut down? Or, conversely, will everything be mobbed? What if I went to the Vatican that day - would that be a good plan?

What do you guys think? Thanks!!!!

On June 2 it will be virtually impossible to drive within Rome and even bus transports will be altered. If your hotel is in the city centre and you have no walking problem it will be a good idea to choose some monuments to visit in the near. If you like parades and fanfares, usually a miltary celebration is held along Fori Imperiali. The Vatican is within the City of Rome an will not be spared by traffic jams an mess.

Remember that it is still a holiday! If you are staying in the center of Rome, will be a pleasure to see the parade and the "Arrows Tricolori". The Vatican Museums, at that time, will open in the evening!

I wouldn't drive in Rome myself, even when it's not Republic Day. Other than that, buses will be running and all museums and archeological sites will be open. The metro may be the best way to get around that day, especially near the parade route. A lot of shops will be closed, but most restaurants should be open.

You can get to the Vatican by metro, so the traffic there shouldn't affect you. If everybody's over at the Via Fori Imperiali to see the parade instead of inside the Vatican Museums, all the better.

Nothing is better than seeing the Italian version of the RAF's Red Arrows flying on their day of independence, in their country! It is a huge parade of military might to a fanfare that makes the Vaticans bells ring (as it is the celebration of the secularisation of Italy). Most attractions arent worth visiting when there is an event like this going on.

get the idea :) viva la repubblica

AtM's and banks may be closed so get cash out before! I was in a smaller city on last year's Republic day, so this may not be the case in Rome...but all the banks were closed and the ATM's were down, and most resteraunts were closed.

The banks will be closed, but the ATMs should be functioning anyway. If they were down, it was unrelated to the holiday. However, when traveling, I prefer to use the ATM of a bank that's open so I can go in and resolve any problem immediately.

Some years ago, my daughter's choir was on a concert tour when one of the choristers had his ATM card retained by a bank in England. The bank was closed, and the choir was leaving just then for its next concert in another town. He had to hang around so he could go to the bank in the morning and then get to the next city on his own.

Ok I just found out it's a public holiday on the day I'm arriving. The hotel is the Domus Caracalla which is near the Coliseum. The flight arrives at 11:00AM, so my question is will the parade be done by then? Also will it be better to take the metro from termini and walk to the hotel or to take the 714 bus?
