While there are many posts (mainly negative) on this famous watering hole - here's a new twist:-

We dropped into the famous Harry's Bar this very afternoon. When the waiter came to take our order we asked for a beer and a glass of white wine – he explained that they did not serve beer or wine – only cocktails and champagne (at a minimum of 18€ (+15% service) a drink; they did have equally over-priced coffee and soft drinks). To top it off – the bar was very ordinary looking; e.g. no pictures of famous patrons, etc. and the menu had a note on it stated that “it was against the law to take photos inside the bar” (huh ??). Well we left in a huff – what a rip-off – poor Ernst Hemingway must be turning in his grave; not sure about his mate Giuseppe Capriani. I tried to convince Mr LL to make one final entry into the bar with his camera poised and take a quick illegal photo – but he chickened out. After this minor fiasco we took the vapereto back to our hotel – making jokes about Harry's Bar and discussing how the story could be embellished into one of those great travel tales.

Harry's is not our cup of tea. When we travel, we want to avoid the overly touristy places. We actually hand out at the hotel bar directly across from Harry's. One of the last places with an indoor smoking room, which is nice in the colder months. We also like going to the Rialto market area late night. Great bars. That's when you can see some of the real Venice.

Hey guys, lighten up - sorry for any misspellings (the odd typo can creep into posts). Also other names / spellings were taken from the DK Eyewitness guide book. BTW - my post was really meant in jest - HB is only a bar; however, it is clear that some think it really is an institution.

TA forms are for posting Q&As, sharing experiences and opinions. I'm don't think flaming posters is part of the accepted etiquette.

luxury-lizard...I took your post, just as I think it was meant, a light hearted jab at Harry's Bar. Correct me if I am wrong.

I absolutely, positevely, resent the fact that ugly Australians are now being lumped into the ugly American category.

Our numbers are big enough already and we are also, now, very broke. You probably won't have us to push around for a while.

How about we gang up on those mean, nasty, ugly Madagascarians. This is a much smaller group to offend.

Hi

I had my wedding reception at Harry's Dolce and the guests who wanted beer were served beer. We also took plenty of photos and even one of the Robbie Williams look-a-like (on a good day) waiter. He said he would get in to trouble for posing with us but the girls wouldn't leave him be!

I loved the place, I'm just a humble peasant who enjoys fine foods and they treated us like royalty. In fact, looking at the bill I don't know how they make a living.. My tongue is not in my cheek, my wedding banquet was far more competitive than anywhere else. I recommended the place to another wedding couple and they were equally blown away.

Thanks

Jeanette
