Hey.... can someone tell me if its still ok to place a trip to Greece within the next month or so given the strikes and other protests etc?
Yes of course it is. There have been some demonstrations, but they have been blown out of all proportion by media looking for sensation.
Hi there
It's never been "unsafe" to travel to Greece. As has been said, it's been blown out of all proportion by the press and given Greece's fragile economy, it needs your tourist euros more now than ever.
Greece has always been the safest country in Europe and these demos haven't changed that one bit/
Hi,
I read all other comments and I can confirm it - Greece it is and it will be a very safe destination for your holidays !
I live in Athens and I confirm that media are boosting what is happening - that is only limited to the centre of Athens, in front of the Parliament.
These are commont manifestations that happen in every country.
Fell free to plan your safe holiday in Sunny Greece :)
there are so many beautiful places to visit !
ciao !

Im on the point of booking a first time short break to Athens to visit the city and its surroundings. This national strike business is a worry though, not so much because of the safety side but more because of the total chaos it may casue on a short break. Im told that the most recent national strike caused much disruption (from the airport to the sea port to tourist attractions to even the TV stations)! Is this true?
Whats the local word in Greece, are these strikes likely to get more frequent and stronger in disruption? Is there a website listing strike dates (although my travel date is several weeks away yet).
PS Im looking at travel in first week of May.
Thanks Forum!
Edited: 14 years agoHi,
I know the media is hyping up what's going on with the riots in Athens, but I am really concerned with traveling there and not being able to get around (taxi, boat taxis to islands and airport shut downs). For those of you who live in Greece, can you please tell me if that's the situation going on now (May 5, 2010)?
Thanks.
This general strike was a one day event - it is not like this all the time.
Strikes and eventual demonstrations are announced beforehand and mostly only in Athens - maybe in some of the other big cities.
Riots are restricted to a small number of mobs in Athens, and are in or around the Syntagma Square and National Assembly in Athens.
Even in Athens you will be safe if you just stay away from Syntagma on days demonstrations are announced.
Have they had any transportation strikes or unrest in Thessaloniki? If we are traveling to Greece the end of this month and cannot risk delays leaving, is it better to fly into Thessaloniki than Athens? Thanks
