Stay in Piraeus for Athens?
Save

Hi - we are visiting Athens in May and we are thinking of staying in Piraeus for 4 nights and taking the metro into the centre of Athens each day for sightseeing rather than stay in a hotel in the middle of the city. We are then going to Paros for 3 nights so could then take the ferry from Piraeus.

Can you please let me know how easy/expensive it is to get from Piraeus into the city centre.

Can you also let me know if it is safe/nice to walk around in Piraeus itself in the evenings.

Thank you

Neville

Hi,

I would stay in Athens, don't be put off by spending time there. Read up on the Plaka, a lovely part of Athens below the Acropolis, it may well suit you. When you leave for Paros take the metro down from Athens, its only a 20 min journey away.

Though parts of Piraeus look slightly seedy, as does Athens in parts, we stayed overnight (Triton hotel) and walked around and ate there feeling perfectly safe and took the fast bus to airport in morning. Also good if you have an early ferry out. No need to commute in to Athens though , that seems a waste of time

Don't know if this is up to date. But in 2010 I think a weeks travel on the under ground and the bus was

10 euros for the week .And it was easy to understand.

I am sorry to say so, but to me Plaka is a kind of a tourist trap. Full of shops selling "funny" t-shirts and caps, copies of antiques, a lot of overpriced tavernas (pretending to be cheap) and shops selling expensives olive products. Pireus is a normal Greek town with normal everyday life.

It may be only a 20 min ride with the Metro between Athens and Pireus, if you stay close to a Metro station on the correct line. From most hotels in Pireus it is a 10 min easy walk to the ferry port.

"Pireus is a normal Greek town with normal everyday life."

Are we talking about the same Piraeus or is this some Pireus somewhere? Hard to imagine a less normal Greek town.

If you walk out of the port area, which is a port area, and over the small hill towards the Zea Marina, you find a completely different town. A normal living Greek town with normal supermarkets, tavernas, shops, cafes and Greek everyday life. But it is not "normal Greek" in the tourist way of "normal".

Hi,

There is a lot more to Piraeus than just the seaport. Pasilimani with its coffee bars, Zea Marina, Kastella (Profitis Ilias), Kallipoli and Piraiki are all nice places.

Minidad, should you decide to stay in Piraeus do note that there is at least one bus service which links Piraeus with Athens.
