Trying to locate a cafe ouzeria near Isthmia.

There's a very pretty cafe on the waterfront at the entrance to the Corinth Canal just beyond Isthmia. I'm told it's one of the prettiest cafes in Greece. Does anyone know it? Can you give me a web address or a name and location please? I'm staying in Nafplio and I would love to visit it, as I saw a photo of it years ago and fell in love with the site. Thanks.

hi onero, I can't think of anyone on the waterfront near Isthmia. There is the water park, Goodys, do these ring a bell? The area is rather ugly, industrial and everything is located on or around the national highway

If you turn left for Epidaurus, you soon come to some seaside hamlets, such as Oreia Eleni {beautiful Helen {of Troy} where there are some picturesque cafes directly on the beach.

Perhaps someone can add more,

A friend just sent me this link to a 'Matt Barrett' page on the internet:

http://athensguide.com/taxitrip.html

If you scroll down this page, the very last photo shows this cafe, and the last paragraph describes it as 'the most perfect cafe-ouzerie'. But alas, no name or address is given. Anyway, this is the place. It looks better in summer when the leaves are out. So, does anyone know this place - described as being 'at the entrance to the Corinth Canal, just beyond the small town of Isthmia'? Can anyone tell me how to get there from Nafplio? Thanks folks.

Hi dianabiz. Thanks for the suggestion. But 'Goodys' doesn't ring a bell with me. However, please take a look at the website I mentioned:

http://athensguide.com/taxitrip.html

There's a photo of this place at the very bottom of this page -- taken in winter when the trees have no leaves. In summer it's much prettier. But Matt Barrett gives no name and address details. Can you identify this place perhaps? Thank you for replying. Harvey.

Hi onero, Have looked at photo and it looks liked the place we stopped for lunch and watching the submersible bridge. Cant help with the name but i think it is used for lunch stop by daytrip coaches combining a boat trip up the canal. So should be easy to find.

thanks linosdekos, well that's the end of the mystery. However, what one perceives as one's heaven is very relative. Just the smell /noise from the national highway, knowing that the waters below are polluted and the motor oil distilleries a bird's eye away is enough to get me running in the opposite direction, that being where you will be, Nauplion and around.

Goody's and the water park are by the canal, not too far from those awful tourist trap cafes just by it. Sorry to be so graphic.

This place is NOT on the motorway - it is just in the corner of the Corinth Canal and it is a little place on the way between Loutraki and Corinth

next to the bridge

If you are very careful you can see that the bridge occasionally brings fish up !

It is one of my favourite places and it is fantastic for frappe in the evening

Very quiet and nice to see the boats going in and out of the canal

You will find the location as 37.950479 , 22.962306 on google maps or try this link

Thank you buhalid.

Your link to a Google Satellite Map worked fine.

But your directions lead me to the submersible bridge at the Loutraki (Adriatic) end of the Corinthian Canal, whereas Isthmaia is at the opposite (Aegean) end of the Canal. Also, the building you indicated is on the mainland side of the canal rather than the Peloponnesian side, and its roof outline does not seem to match the one pictured on Matt Barrett's page. So I was a little confused.

However, I have now studied the Google Satellite map in detail and scrolled to look at both ends of the Canal.

After carefully examining locations and building shapes, I suspect the place pictured at the bottom of Matt Barrett's webpage:

http://athensguide.com/taxitrip.html

is actually the little building shown at the Eastern or Aegean end of the Corinth Canal on your Google map, just near the final little bridge across the canal at that end. This is also just near Isthmia so it is a better fit with the description given by Matt Barrett. I cannot see any of the oil refineries dianabiz talked about - the Google map shows them to be further North and well out of the way of the canal here. Even the national highway she mentions curves away from the Aegean here and leaves the area untouched. So if you go back to your Google Map, and scroll right to the Aegean (Isthmian) end of the Canal, you will see this cafe on the Peloponnesian side of the Canal, just on the left of the last little roadbridge over the canal before it debouches into the Aegean. It's set in a semi-rural area. No major industry nearby according to the Google Satellite map. This building matches the roofline and outline of Matt Barrett's cafe as pictured on his site. So I suspect this is the one I am after. That's my humble opinion anyway. But I'm still missing a name and address. Anyone?

Distilleries are certainly there or thereabouts, possibly not visible, but does this matter? If you go to Kalamaki way, or Oreia Eleni {the route which takes you to Epidaurus} the distilleries are in perfect view. It's Loutraki which has its back to it. Corinth Canal is ot just a tourist attraction, it is used for passage. This makes no difference however, as I said this is relative. Personal choice, so go for it.

Woohoo! Good on you andony! That's the place. I actually spotted it last month while crossing the main highway bridge over the Corinthian Canal, returning (by public bus) from Nafplion in the Peloponnese to Athens. (2.5 hour trip costs 18 Euros return in May 2010.) You could see its red roof and its beer garden from the window on the right-hand side of the bus, although it was a long way down and away from the highway, towards Isthmalia, situated near where the Corinthian canal enters the Aegean. Its on the Peloponnesian side, just past the submersable bridge in your photo. It was a good kilometer from the highway, so it would h ave no highway noise; and it's miles away from the oil refineries someone else mentioned (nowhere near them in fact ~ they're actually eight kilometers closer to Athens and around two h eadlands from the canal)! From the main highway bridge over the canal, it looked like a great spot to have a meal and watch ships pass by. Others who've been there say that's correct, but I couldn't get there this trip. However, I plan to make it a stop on my next visit to Greece. Did you visit it, andony? What were your impressions?
