We are planning to take a Flying Cat from Athens to Hydra and spend one night at the Alkionides Pension. (Our reservation has been made.)

The time of our visit is the first week in October so I expect the weather may be warm to cool. Would that be a fair guess?

Even though I have visited www.hydra.gr, I'm having trouble getting specific information.

Is there a Hydra expert who can help?

Question: If weather is warm and sunny, we would love to go swimming in the sea. Could someone give us some idea of where to find water taxis? Approximate cost? What would be the best place to visit for a swim? We would like a safe, clean spot with facilities. I understand that the shore will be rocky, and we should wear water shoes.

Question: If the weather isn't good for swimming, what types of excursions are available to book on Hydra? We would be most interested in something relaxing - not into a whole lot of hiking. Is there a picturesque place we shouldn't miss? Are excursions by donkey available? Sorry to be so inquisitive, but I love to plan in advance.

Question: Would it be a good idea to take seasickness medication before boarding the Flying Cat? I don't want anything to ruin our 24 hours on Hydra.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Did you receive any feedback from your posting? We will be in Hydra Oct. 12-14 and have the same kind of questions

I received no responses. However, I have just returned from our glorious Greece vacation and hope to catch you before your departure.

Hydra is blissful. That's all there is to say. You will find a beautiful village with the most gracious people you can possibly imagine.

Make sure you walk the harbor from end to end. The water is clear and the sunlight shimmers on its surface.

You will find MANY tavernas with delicious food. Please don't limit yourself to the ones located on the waterfront. Take walks throughout the village, and you will find tons of quaint places with good cuisine.

We did all of our shopping on Hydra. The shopkeepers are extremely friendly. They are quite willing to bargain because it's the end of the season. No one was pushy at all.

We stayed overnight at the Alkionides Pension. It was lovely.

Things you can do:

Donkey ride;

Swim in the Aegean Sea; Boats and water taxis are available to take you to Hydra's beaches, OR you may choose to swim from the "Cave." This is a rocky beach with ladders that lead into the water. I observed people of ALL ages enjoying this little spot for sunning and swimming. If you stand facing the harbor, turn left and just keep walking. Eventually, you will come upon the locals doing their swimming from the rocks. If I had been wearing my suit, I would certainly have joined them!

Sit and watch the world go by as you gaze at the gorgeous scenery;

Enjoy a wide variety of tavernas;

Walk;

Strike up friendships with the locals. Everyone was SO friendly, and we would love to return and stay longer;

You do feel as though time has stopped and God is giving you a little piece of heaven to enjoy on earth.

On another note: We used Flying Cat 1 to get to Hydra. It was a very nice ride. We used a Flying Dolphin to get back to Athens. Again, it was a very nice ride.

Can't report a single problem or complaint. Enjoy!
