Yllas Log Cabins with Inghams - Recommended?

Hi all, Im looking at booking a short santa break (3 nights) for myself, my husband and my little boy (he will 2 and half next dec ) for Dec 2011. I wanted to book it now so its done!

Ive looked at the reviews on here and I fancy the Yllas log cabins with Inghams. Can anyone that has been recommend it? I want it to be authentic, abit more rural and not commerical and thats why Im thinking Yllas instead of Levi.

Any advice would be recommended really, info about Yllas and if it will be suitable with a 2 and a half year old?

Thanks & Merry Christmas

First things first, I would urge you to wait another year. You and your son will get so much more from it if he's 3 1/2 rather than 2 1/2. With that extra year under his belt he will really understand what it's all about.

I was in Lapland last week and was reliably informed that they are planning to build accommodation to provide an additional 13,000 beds in Yllas. I'm unsure of the timescale but you may wish to keep this in mind if you want rural and authentic.

Yllas (Akaslompolo) is definitely more authentic than Levi though which is very much a purpose built ski resort with 600,000 annual visitors (that's 3 times the population of Finnish Lapland!).

It's not my idea of the traditional Lapland but others love it so please read a few reviews before deciding.

But, most of all, wait a year, it will make such a difference.

Hi Houxty, thanks for the advice, I was beginning to wonder if we should wait another year, given the price we wont go every year so youre probably right.

Id still be keen to hear any other advice re Yllas though even if we wait another year it is always handy to know.

Thanks

Inghams also go to Saariselka which is much smaller. Might be worth considering too.

I have been to yllas and stayed in the inghams log cabins, they are lovely and yllas is great too, however, saariselka is even better and the cabins are more basic than the ones in yllas but they are in a better position, also there is a great toboggan run in saarislka - the only down side is that to get there with inghams is an additional 3 hour bus journey which may be the make or break point of your decision on where to go

however, you could look at esprit as they fly direct but will be far more expensive

I would also agree that you need to wait until your son is older, it's hard work with a young one

I have been working in Lapland with tourist groups. The youngest visitors I've had have been less than a year and followed by a lot of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and so on year-olds. Your decision will depend very much on what you expect from the holiday and how much you want your son to understand and remember of it. Clothing and weatherwise he'll be fine at whatever age as long as you keep him (and yourself) properly dressed.
