That's it really!

We 're a family of 2 adults and 7 & 3 year old boys off to Yllas for 3 nghts. I've got us all thermal base layers, glove liners and heat holder socks. Would really prefer not to have to shell out another £40 for silk sock liners which we are unlikely to wear again. However, I really don't want cold, whiney children!

You can subsitute them with thin hiking socks or the like - anything wicking goes, cotton not. Or just wear multiple layers of normal socks.

Thanks for the advice. Trouble is, most children's socks are cotton! Hard to buy wool or synthetic socks for them. I've found some silk liners with 30% off so I think I'll get them then I'll be able to put their regular socks as a mid-later between the silk and the heat holders.

marks and sparks do wool socks and tbh, we have worn thermal socks that have cotton in them and they have been fine - didnt wear them skiing as they would be an issue but for walking about they will be fine

Thanks poe.tuesday. I'll check out M&S tomorrow. Is the difference between walking about and skiing the likelihood of your feet getting hot and sweaty or is there something else I'm missing?

it's all about sweat: cotton absorbs moisture and becomes cold. For just short hops outdoors you can wear even cotton clothes and even jeans with long legged underwear. Also I wear cotton socks, but if it's really cold, and I plan to stay long periods of time outdoors I use hiking or sports socks. Min two layers of socks, sometimes even three but this migh then make shoes too tight - you should be able to move your toes and there should be air left around your feet as it's the air that will keep your feet warm.
