 From Ayia Napa to Famagusta

Ok need some advise please.March 2009

Leaving Ayia Napa how do my wife and I get to Farmagusta.Searching the internet it appears that we cannot hire a car and drive through. So do we take a taxi to the border and then hire a car through to Farmagusta/Salamis or what?

There is very little info on were the border post is or directions but we will be spending 7 days in Northern cyprus exiting Nicosia to Paphos after that. Its just the Famagusta I cannot work out.Times etc would help as well

Thanks from sunny South Africa

Some car hire companies will let you take the car over the border, Petsas being one of them. We have done this several times paying the extra insurance with them. Email them for a hire quote, always cheaper than their website price.

The border is near Vrysoulles through the army base, and is easy to find. Famagusta is well worth a visit, lovely old town within walls and then the beach area and all the empty hotels past the barbed wire. Salamis is also very interesting if you like ruins (we do). Kyrenia, Bellapais, and Kantara castle also recommended. Hope you have a good time.

No the border crossing is not Dhekalia its at Ayias Nicolias which is just past Vrysoulles.

If you drive from Napa, head for Paralimni, go straight through, through Derinya and when you get to Sotira turn right to Vrysoulles, keep on going until you reach a T junction, turn right and follow the road through the British base to the border.

You will have to stop at the first kiosk for insurance, minimum is 1 month for 35 Euros (as of Monday), extra drivers no problem as long as you have UK driving licenses. Next kiosks on the right are for visas, free of charge and stamped on paper, then on to the gate at the end where a soldier will check your passports and insurance....then on you go. Remember all the places in the North have Turkish names.....makes the drive a little more interesting lol

As a general tip, once through the border keep going until you reach a large rounderbout with sort of bronze faces carved in the middle (think its the second r'bout) Left is towards Nicossia, straight on is Bogaz, right is Famagusta/Varosha
