Trip to Vienna w/ 2 teenegers- itinerary help

We are planning a 6 days trip to Vienna.

It's going to be the first time in Europe for the boys (18 & 14 years old). Our flight is to Vienna. We are thinking to rent a car , spend 2 days in Munich, then to stop overnight in Salzburg on our way back to Vienna, spend a day there and at the end to stay in Vienna for 3 days. We would really appreciate any suggestions how to make this trip work out for the entire family, providing that boys are not much into architecture.

We’d like to visit the science museum in Munich, it seems to be really interesting for the boys.

Maybe to stay in Vienna and to see a bit of the surrounding area (e.g. day trips) will be a better idea than to drive to Munich and back?

If so, where to go, to take a guided tour or not, etc.

Please help!

With just 6 days to visit - the less travel time the better.

A few suggestions

In Vienna some interesting places such as the following may fill the intersets of your boys rahter than a trip to Munich.

The Technical Museum- many interesting exhibits from trains to oil drilling.

The Natural History Museum

The Criminal Museum- kids seem to like it.

The museums in the new section of the Hofburg- arms and armour, Ephesus.

Also an Army Museum including old tanks - a part of a submarine ( yes, Austria once had a navy)

Good exhibits of old rifles and uniforms grouped by period.

The Prater Amusement park

A boat trip on the Danube River.

Most everyone likes Schönbrunn Palace regardless of age.

A place often missed there, is the fine exhibit of royal carriages- perhaps interesting for kids too.

Look to the Vienna Tourist website for more info on the above mentioned things

http://www.info.wien.at

You can go to Salzburg for the day -

less than 3 hours by train

Many things to see are clustered close together and not far from the train station.

for train info -

leave early in the morning - return later in the evening- perhaps eat on the train dining car.

Recalling when I was a teen in Vienna (in the Dark Ages), my favorites included:

Schönbrunn

Prater fun park

Cafes serving yummy desserts

Climbing St. Stephen's tower

There is so much to see in Vienna and the surrounding area.

If your boys are into biking, a good day or overnight (even better!) trip would be to ride bikes along the Wachau from Melk to Krems. I think the rail service offers a train/boat/bike package from Vienna on weekends. Or, you could easily arrange to do something like this yourselves. (We did -- for five days, using Dürnstein as a base.)
