We were thinking of taking the train to Melk, seeing the Abbey and then doing the boat ride to Krems. Rather than returning to Vienna by train, we thought of spending the night and touring the wineries the next day, but we need a car.

Is there car rental available at either Krems or Melk train station? We usually rent with Hertz but they only rent in Sankt Polten or Linz.

Are there some local companies?

From the Danube Valley we will take train to Prague.

Krems is not really a large city ( 20000 perhaps ) no regular rental companies there. Melk even smaller so no luck. Cloest rental agancy is St. Polten as you mention.

You are probably best advised to get your car in Vienna. The trip Vienna - Krems is about one hour on good highways. Krems to Melk less than 30 minutes throough beautiful countryside with nice wineries and beautiful small towns.

You have various choices - with the car- the boat dock in Krems has a parking lot for a trip to Melk. Melk Abbey is just above the Town and the Danube. Or you can drive to melk and experience this area - most enjoyable.

An over night in the wachau area is a great idea - many good places- wineries to visit good restaurants etc.

Thanks, Vertical, for this response. I just posted another item with a question about which area to pick up car in Vienna/St. Polten. Hope you can give me some more specific help on that.

You might want to think about renting bikes to tour the wineries. We middle-agers pedaled -- Wachau Bikes did delivery and pick-up -- with a toddler strapped to the back of the bike.

I know this isn't your question, but the bike paths along the Danube and through the vineyards are incredible. The vineyards even have signs telling you what kid of grapes are being grown next to the path. We found several great vineyards within easy cycling distance of Dürnstein. Several Heurigen on the bike path perhaps would have been difficult to find from the road. Most if not all of our fellow wine tasters had also arrived by bike. (And some of them were old enough to be our parents!)
