I don't really like Innsbruck - it's always struck me as deeply depressing and overrun with ravening tourists. I do like Kufstein which is an easy and very picturesque stop on the banks of the Inn river and directly on the trainline from Innsbruck to Salzburg. It has a magnificent fortress which is great fun to explore. The Hotel Auracher Lochl there has been recommended to me by other posters, and it looks very quaint.

We spent a week last summer in July because of work. I've been to Innsbruck several times and always enjoy my stay there, but if I had my druthers, I would stay in Hall in Tyrol, just a 10 or so minute train ride away. Hall iT is much more charming without the massive hordes of tourists.
