I am travelling with a 14 year old and 17 year old. We want to try some good local cuisine and not get stuck in expensive tourist traps where the food is not that good and triple the price of local establishments. Any good suggestions for the following cities: Amsterdam, Cologne, Berlin, Munich, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Vienna. Thanks so much.

Hi,

While not in Innsbruck, we can highly the Burgtaverne in Hall in Tirol, which is just 6 miles east of Innsbruck. Very easy by car, train or bus. The Burgtaverne is a restaurant in Burg Hasseg (castle). We loved it . Medieval atmosphere and reasonable prices.

Hall in Tirol itself is a beautiful old town. The pedestrian zone is actually larger (and nicer in our opinion) than Innsbruck. Another option in Hall in Tirol would be the Gasthof Badl's restaurant. Very nice, very good and very reasonable. That's a lot of very's!

These two places are across the footbridge over the river Inn from one another.

Neither place is an overpriced tourist trap.

Hope this helped.

I have only been to these places, but they are more like trendy cafes/lounges:

The terrace bar of the Penz hotel - the view is just great and you can enjoy a nice drink there:

Lichtblick - 360Grad - located on top of the Rathausgallerien shopping mall and close to the Penz hotel:

In this shopping mall, the Rathausgallerien, there is also a very good and not too expensive Asian retaurant:

I can recommend:

Cafe Hofgarten.

In the (where else?) Hofgarten across from the Congress Zentrum. Like a beer garden, great outdoor ambience, surprisingly good food that we will visit again. My husband's colleagues who work at the university recommended it. Soups, salad, traditional Austrian grill items. Great place to unwind after a day of work (for hubby).

Thai Li

Old town. Wonderful break from heavy Austrian food.

Löwenhaus

North-ish of old town along the river. Nice beer garden, surprisingly good fish dishes.

Goldener Adler

An outdoor restaurant in the pedestrian area of old town. Good traditional Austrian food with great people watching.

Food Hall

On the river in the old town. Bought food for the train trip here. Can't remember the German name.

The restaurants above are inexpensive, not cheap. They also have varying degrees of tourists. But they are good and fulfilled my need for German (well, almost) cuisine from my days of living in Germany.
